Along came Ryan
Things here in Newport are different. If you don't have 'it', you just aren't cool. Newport is sunny year round, which can be good or bad. When Ryan Atwood came into town, Newport was shocked to have a "criminal" from Chino staying.
We've
been on the run
Driving in the sun
Looking out for
#1
California here we come
Right back where we started
from
Hustlers grab your guns
Your shadow weighs a
ton
Driving down the 101
California here we come
Right back
where we started from
California!
Here we come!
On
the stereo
Listen as we go
Nothing's gonna stop me
now
California here we come
Right back where we started
from
Pedal to the floor
Thinkin' of the roar
Gotta get us to
the show
California here we come
Right back where we started
from
California!
Here we come!
"Okay, bye mom, I'm going out with Luke," Marissa says as she heads out the door. Luke has been Marissa's boyfriend since 5th grade, and once again, were going out to get drunk. This was not unusual for most teens in Newport. At all of the parties you can see people drinking and getting high and whatnot. Marissa is just happy to be going out, getting away from her mother, Julie. Marissa and Julie aren't the best of friends. As Marissa was stepping into Luke's car, she remembered when Luke was in 8th grade, when he was smoking pot. Once he tried to get Marissa high, and she did. That night when she went home, her mother was very upset. Marissa went to the mall after that, and stole a handbag and some earrings. After shoplifting, Marissa then decided to break up with Luke, though 2 days later she was back with him. After they went out, Luke drove a drunken Marissa home.
The next day, all the Newport women went to their yogalates class. These women will gossip about literally ANYTHING. They spend their time in the locker room gossiping. "Did you hear about Beth? I heard she's on drugs," one women said. "No, she just has a severe drinking problem," another said. The room suddenly became quiet as Beth entered. They then start to talk about the effects of mariunja use on their children. Kirsten says, "Oh, Seth would never do drugs, his mind is on that girl-Summer." Kirsten wasn't much of a gossiper. After the class, the women usually stopped for lunch at Henrietta's Bakery and ordered "the usual," which was a low-calorie frappachino and a low-carb cookie.
Not everyone is Newport has friends like Marissa. Poor Seth Cohen spends his days reading and writing comic books and playing video games while eating junk food. He does go to the crazy Newport parties, but ends up coming home a wreck, after what the water polo players did to him. "They peed in my shoes, Dad!" Seth says after one of the parties. Just like Marissa, he has a flashback of when the "new kid" came. The new kid was trying to fit in with these water polo players, but Seth remembers overhearing, "Welcome to the O.C. bitch." These words echoed in his head. Seth hated the water polo players. Seth had tried to become friends with the guy, but after that he couldn't trust anybody. The new kid transfered soon after.
The guys in Newport are all wealthy, except Jimmy Cooper, who is a financial rut. Jimmy and Julie are married, though Julie can't stand her husband this way. "Just give me one more chance, Julie, and I know I will be okay. I am every time," Jimmy says. "Well honey, this time could be different." Julie walks away because she was very pissed off at Jimmy, knowing that this would be the last time. Jimmy knew that if someone didn't help him, bad, bad things would happen.
