Dear Ministry of Magic

I am writing to complain about the lack of early intervention in the lives of muggle borns. As I am sure you are aware muggle borns, and muggle raised, do not hear about the wizarding world until a few short months before they attend school. This is not enough time to learn enough about the world they are about to join. As a result of this muggle borns often struggle to fit in in the magical world. Why are muggle borns not told about the wizarding world earlier when their names have been down for Hogwarts since birth? Some muggle borns were planning on attending fee paying schools before instead choosing to attend Hogwarts. As they only received the letters a few months before term actually starts their is a high chance that their parents will then have to pay the fees for that school for the first term as well, regardless of whether or not they actually attend. This is unfair and could be avoided by simply telling the parents and child about Hogwarts earlier. If parents were told early on then they would be prepared for their child's accidental magic and wouldn't be alarmed or scared. If the child was told by their seventh birthday, earlier than that they might be a risk to the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, they could be prepared for Hogwarts and would understand about the culture of the wizarding world.

The culture in the wizarding world is vastly different to that of any muggle community. Muggle borns need time to adjust and learn all about our world. When I arrived at Hogwarts I found that many muggle borns struggled as the had no clue why a bezoar is used in so many potions or what magical properties boomslangs skin has. Everything, right down to the fairy tales told to young children, Young half bloods and pure bloods read The Tales of Beedle the Bard which includes stories such as The Three Brothers and Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump, meanwhile young muggle borns and muggle raised wizards and witches grow up reading about Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast. When I brought up Cinderella to my pure blood friend, after being very close friends and both in Gryffindor for seven years, he thought it was an illness. Seven years of close friendship and yet he was still completely ignorant of the muggle world. The wizarding world is like a completely different country to the muggle borns. The wizarding world has celebrities like Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Gilderoy Lockhart and Merlin, who every single person in the English wizarding community has heard of apart from the muggle borns who have just joined the wizarding world. In turn the muggles have celebrities like Katy Perry, J.K Rowling and Zac Efron who every muggle and muggle born has heard of.

It is completely unfair on muggle borns not to introduce them to the wizarding world sooner. That is why I am proposing the Muggle born early intervention law. Every muggle born will be assigned an adult witch or wizard who will visit them every month or two to teach them the basics about the wizarding world and take them to Quidditch games or shopping in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley so that when the muggle borns do arrive at Hogwarts they will be used to the wizarding world and on a level playing field to the wizard raised students. This law will also help parents get used to the idea of having a witch or wizard in the family as well as allow them to understand the world their child is about to join and allow them to understand what their child is doing each year at school. This law will not only benefit the muggle borns but also the wizarding world as it will create hundreds of jobs that don't require very many special skills.

I am sure you can see why this would be a very good idea.

Your sincerely

Hermione Granger
