Dumbledore raised his eyebrows. "Could you possibly be feeling sorry for Lord Voldemort?" (page 262 - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince)

From his spot in the corner of the room, Tom could hear the other children stomping about the orphanage, and screaming his name. He tried not to shake, and he tried to breathe silently, but that proved to be impossible. He couldn't deny it - he was frightened.
He wasn't sure about what he had done to envoke the wrath of the other children - but if it was anything like what they normally did, they were most likely tormenting him just so he would get in trouble again.
"Tommy, where are you? We just want to talk to you," came one of the children's mocking voices.
He knew the people who were hunting him down - the three ring leaders: Billy Stubbs, Dennis Bishop, and Amy Benson. Billy and Dennis were the leaders of the boys, and Amy was the leader of the girls. But, he had no idea as to why they were going after him.
"Tom! Why don't you come out of hiding?" Amy asked. They were closer now - outside his bedroom door. Tom shrank back even further into the corner.
"Tom! Get out!" demanded Dennis.
"...No," he rasped, his voice barely audible through the door. Sweat ran down his face, and he was struggling not to cry. He bit his lip, and waited for an answer.
Laughter.
"Oh, is wittle Tommy scared? Is he frightened?"
Tom could barely stand the mocking laughter coming from right outside his bedroom. He wanted to escape. He wanted to be anywhere except where he was then.
He stood up, and walked over to the door.
"LEAVE. ME. ALONE," he bellowed, as loud as he was able to. His heart was going at a mile a minute, and he felt the overwhelming urge to faint. But, he could still hear the cackles on the other side of the door.
"...What did you say?"
"LEAVE ME ALONE!"
"Everybody run! Tom's cursed us all! Someone tell Mrs. Cole!!"
Screams followed. He could hear the other children running back to their rooms, slamming the doors to their rooms shut.
However, just as he thought that he was safe, the door burst open, knocking him backwards. He wasn't able to tell who had entered the room, though.
Darkness closed in on him, and he fainted.
