Blind Goodbye
"Sai?" Hikaru's voice barely breaks the silence in the darkened hotel room. "You're still here right? Tell me you're still here."
Sai looks up from where he had been settled against the wall, "Yes, I'm here." He looks away, whispering too quietly for Hikaru to hear, "For the moment. I don't want to leave you yet. Hikaru. . ."
There is a relieved sigh and the shadow that is Hikaru sits up from the futon, "Good. I. . . It was just a dream then." He runs a shaky hand through his hair, mussing it further, and whispers, "Sai? Come closer?"
Graceful as a leaf Sai crosses the room and settles next to the smaller boy. "Hikaru."
"Sai." Trembling fingers reach out and Hikaru smiles in the darkness, "Strange how we can sorta touch when you go through everything else." He touches Sai's shoulder and then leans lightly against the ghost, "Sai?" At the questioning hum Hikaru swallows nervously and continues, "You know I like you, right?"
"Of course. We're friends Hikaru."
"No."
"No? But—"
Hikaru puts out a finger to hush Sai, "Yeah, we're friends but I like you. I think I have for a while. How stupid of me, right? Liking a ghost. . ." Hikaru trails off at Sai's confused expression. "Like-like. Like a guy likes a girl like. And I know you're notagirlbut—"
Sai takes his turn to hush Hikaru, "I see. It's ok. You don't have to explain." He brushes his fingers through Hikaru's bangs.
"You're not. . . upset?"
"Why should I be?"
"You're. . . Really?" Hikaru manages to look both relieved and incredulous, nervous laughter escaping him.
Sai sighs, "I only regret that I am a ghost."
Hikaru's laughter lightens, "That's ok. I'm just glad you're not upset. . ." He trails off, "Is it alright, I mean. . . Can I?"
"You can." Sai smiles fondly and accepts the chaste kiss from Hikaru.
After a thoughtful moment Hikaru smiles, "It's good like this. So long as you're always here." He entwines his fingers with Sai's, "Come to bed with me? I wanna feel you close." At Sai's mute nod Hikaru lies down and scoots over to make room, sighing into Sai's chest, "Silly. We'll be together forever. Still. . . 'snice."
As Hikaru's breathing settles into the rhythms of deep sleep Sai brushes tears from his cheeks, whispering, "If only that were true. I love you too, Hikaru. I wish I didn't have to leave so soon. . ."
