Love and Hate: the Drumline
Chapter 1: Unexpected
It was April 8th. I had talked with my best friend Abbey about joining band. She was in band before she came to my school and we've been best friends ever since. I loved to play the drums and to sing and to twirl. Yes… I said it to twirl, but not for just anybody only for the cyclone cheerleaders. I made myself a promise when I was seven yrs old when I started twirling batons that I would never twirl for anyone except my squad. I loved to do all these things and they kept me busy. Abbey, throughout our entire 8th grade year had been bugging me about joining our high school band. I thought about it and I knew I wouldn't join cheerleading in high school for several reasons: 1) girls in high school are witches. 2) I was still going to be captain of my middle school squad after I left. 3) I had my own squad to worry about. So finally I had told Abbey I would join. I, Annabeth Jones was going to be a band geek. I had grown up my whole life surrounded by petty, whiny little girls who wanted to be on the squad and joining band gave me a break from all that. So on Tuesday Abbey and I went down to Clearwater high school where she had band practice every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to ask if I could join band. Mr. K , the director was sitting in his office while kids were hanging backstage. " Mr. K, this is Annabeth and she wants to join band." He looked at me inquisitively and asked " What were you considering to play?" I answered, " Drumline." At first he laughed considering I was very petite but he didn't know my real strength that I had acquired from cheerleading. Then after seeing the look on my face which was filled with annoyance he said, "How well do you play?" Abbey had answered for me,
" She's amazing she can play wizards of winter from the Tri- Siberian Orchestra with her eyes closed." He said, "Would you play for us? We must see if you can play. There's a drumset on stage." We walked backstage and the we he was referring to was the drumline. Three guys, Stephen, David , and Logan. When Mr. K had told them they started laughing, that is until I started playing. I don't want to brag but I was good and I knew I was good. That's what happens when you practice all the time for fun like I do. Abbey had a smug look on her face and I knew everyone was a bit shocked. It was probably because we had come from my cheer practice so me looking all petite and girly in my captain uniform and ponytail they had thought it as a joke. Drumming is no joke and then after the awkward silence Mr. K said, " Welcome to marching band, there's practice today so if you would like to stay and observe. Then jenny came in and screamed Annabeth! Then she almost tackled me and I just said, "Another reason I joined band to get away from all this." hahaha everyone laughed and I could've sworn Stephen looked at me funny. After that we still had 10 minutes before practice so she went to introduce me to everyone and the rest of the drumline followed with curious looks on their faces. We walked into a fairly small room, that had painted splattered walls and the wall at the far end was solid and blue. I looked around at all the trophies and the mess of the room. I was going to like these people. They were my new family.
