Despair has a funny way of working on people, did you know? Whether it is depression, sadness, even over the most trivial things, a missed goal, a bad grade, or more serious matters such as a lost loved one or a friend killed, all misfortune builds an everlasting chain of despair, causing the humanity in everyone to corrupt, to twist, to turn evil even.

Time passes, wounds heal, amends are made, but even after all that time, scars remain.

When a scar reopens, all of its built up pain comes rushing forward with the force of a torrent, taking control of your mind till all that remains are the few base animal instincts to kill.

Despair is a part of us all. Everlasting, always present, it will never leave us alone.

Take this burning village in front of me for example. Men and women and children are running in terror from the enchanted jet black flames, as its hungry blazes consumes all it touches into nothing, as each human is killed by the hungry flames. As the blazes spread, I hum a little tune, a nursery rhyme from when I was younger, before reality tore my life apart.

Houses are burnt down as a child wanders about, calling for her mother in a daze. Upon finding her, the young child blindly stumbles towards her, her young mind unable to comprehend the danger she was in, as a support beam fell upon her, the mother crying out in despair as she broke down into tears.

"Feel the despair that I now feel."

Even for everything we do, everything positive in our life, a greater force of misfortune comes to haunt oneself. For all good, there is more evil..

In my eyes swimming with tears, I have but one thought as my grief overwhelms me in a tidal wave of sorrow, with the flames of corpses being burnt away and the dark flames reflecting in my blackened eyes.

Why?

Why?

Why?

A massive chain of ofudas rips apart the ground in front of me as I jump back. Looking up, I can see a red and white figure garbed in a Shrine Maiden's outfit, with a Gohei in hand and Yin Yang Orb hovering nearby.

Seeing the figure through my tear stricken eyes, I smile brightly, so very brightly, as I unleash my flames towards the woman, in an attempt to incinerate her.

Any normal human would have been killed instantly, were it not for the barrier enshrouding the woman in its protective cover, shielding her from any magical attacks.

My tears falling, a smile upon my lips, I release my claws and charge the woman in a blind charge, laughing with pure madness as I do so.

A trio of orbs surround me, each primed for detonation, as the woman yells, "Halt! Cease your-"

Her warnings fall upon deaf ears as I continue my mad rush, before she whispers something.

"I'm sorry."

She lifts her right hand, and closes it from an open palm to a fist.

The three orbs of energy explode simultaneously as I am enveloped in the sweet, sweet pain of death. My lifeblood flows easily out of my body onto the ash filled and bloodied earth, turning the once red blood into a disgusting shade of black, a sign of my degradation into evil.

My once pristine wings of blue were a sickly shade of black now, as both were torn beyond repair.

"If despair this great could exist, then perhaps life isn't worth living."

Falling to the ground in front of the Shrine Maiden, her face streaming with tears for her actions, I can only say one thing.

For what she did, was the epitome of kindness anyone had ever shown me in this wretched life. So what does one say to express the gratitude of a lifetime?

"Arigatou."
