I've always wondered how Neville felt when he killed Nagini. Was he just concentrating on the last mission he thought Harry would give? Or was he thinking much more than that? I believe the second – his feelings washed away with Nagini's blood, and that he felt like a new man afterward.

Neville pulled out the long sword of Godric Gryffindor, and stared straight at Nagini's yellow eyes. But instead of feeling woozy of the great serpent's charm, he glared into them, defiant, and he saw Bellatrix Lestrange. Bellatrix, the tormentor of his parents, even laughing while she did so. He saw Snape, sneering at the mud-like substance in the cauldron Neville held. He saw Rookwood, murdering Fred Weasley, someone he always looked up to, though in a frightened and admiring sort of way. He saw all the people who gave their lives to save others, all the people Lord Voldemort had murdered. He heard Harry's voice- It's got to be killed, heard his grandmother's proud voice- You truly are your father's son, and even heard the tiniest whisper of his mum - I'm sorry for not being there. He saw, and he heard, and he swung the sword with as much might as he could muster. For Fred, for Harry, for his grandmother, for everyone, dead or alive, for his parents…

He glimpsed a red flash as the sword neatly sliced off the great snake's head and then – Neville Longbottom swirled into the depths of black, the sword clattering to the floor with a clang. The crimson blood had washed away his fears, his hates, his sorrows…

Oliver Wood rushed forward and pulled the passed out figure of Neville from the dangers of battle, and into the hospital wing, where Madam Pomfrey quickly magicked a mattress out of nowhere – all the beds were taken. It was as white as a nurse's uniform.

As the older, burly boy gently put him onto the cot, he noticed that a small smile rested on Neville's lips. For he had broken free of his vow to avenge his parents, he had done a part in demolishing his worst nemesis, he had pushed down his worst fears, saved a few lives, and most important of all, had saved himself.

"It's okay, Mum, I'm okay now."
