Kagome lay in her bed, well after midnight, thinking of Sango. The well had been closed for almost a year now, and she felt sure the young demon slayer and monk had married. She wondered how the preparations had gone. What did they wear? What was said during the ceremony? Who presided? Did they go back to the slayer village or build a hut near Kaede? What was the party after the ceremony like?
With a slight smile Kagome also wondered if the monk had made good on his desire to start a family right away. Was Sango pregnant by now? How did she look? Was she eating right? Would it be a boy or girl? How was her health? She hoped the birthing would be easy on her friend. She knew Miroku would be so happy he'd be beside himself with all the activity.
Kagome found her thoughts wandering toward her school friends. They all were headed to university right after high school: Eri was to become a journalist, Yuka was going into business, Ayumi wanted to be a teacher and Hojo was leaning toward medicine. Ayumi and Hojo had started dating and it was whispered they would marry after they graduated university.
It was not part of her character to be jealous of other people's successes and she was so proud every one of her friends had come so far; however, Kagome felt she had been forgotten. Everyone was moving past her on their own paths when her path had abruptly stopped, with nothing to show for her effort. She hadn't expected a reward for defeating Naraku and completing the jewel, nor did she expect anything once she graduated high school. In truth she had no idea about university so she didn't think about it. But after everything she had been through in both eras during her year of time travel she had dared to hope she would come through the final battle with Naraku to find Inuyasha beside her. She didn't care what era she ended up in, she never asked for anything for herself, but she had hoped the kamis would find what was deep in her heart and grant her that small wish.
Kagome decided she wasn't going to think any more on it since it was obviously not helping her sleep. Instead she headed to Goshinboku to meditate, and that is where her mother found her the next morning, sleeping on her side, wrapped around the trunk of the God tree.
