Tradition

My curious son asked today whoever was it that decided the livery of the Tower of the Guard be black? I shrugged and told him that it was tradition, having no other answer to give him. Now I wonder if there was there a genuine reason for the choice? Did the stains of warfare show up less well on such dark fabric? Was another color far too easily encarmined? Or is it that we still mourn the loss of our King? Was the livery of Gondor once white like the Tree that stands for all that was lost and all that was saved when Numenor fell? I find I am shamed to call myself Loremaster for not having a real answer for my son.
