Who he truly was

~ Nanao wondered who he truly was in the last moments of her life. ~

From the beginning she knew she would fall in love with him. She resisted him at first but it wasn't long before she melted for his silly antics, jokes and the feeling of safety whenever she was around him.

He wasn't the perfect man. He was lazy and drunk a lot. He often displayed a care free attitude and Nanao could count on one hand the times he let his facade fell with her. He liked to hide his true intentions but she couldn't blame him for it, she did that too. She accepted him the way he was, she was sure she wasn't the perfect wife either and he accepted her the way she was.

He was good at reading people, especially her. It had been annoying at times but it also felt good that he was always there for her. In difficult times he just held her until she calmed down. She always felt comforted and safe when he did that.

All their friends thought they were perfect for each other. Their personalities were very different, but somehow it seemed to work out between them. She was the serious one and he often tried to lighten her up. He always made sure she didn't work too hard and cared for her when she felt sick.

The first time they slept together had been an horrible experience for her. She was a virgin and he had been with many women before. Even though he was careful with her, it had hurt so much she didn't want to have sex ever again. With a lot of convincing from him they finally did it again. It wasn't as bad as the first time and after few more times she actually enjoyed it. And she could tell he enjoyed it too.

He was a soldier who didn't like to fight, how ironic as that may be. She could see his pained expression whenever he had to kill someone. He did what he had to do but after all these years it didn't became any easier for him.

That's why she couldn't believe she was stabbed in the back.. by him. She looked over her shoulder and only saw his face with no emotion. She had never seen his face without emotion before. It was like the past few years had all been a lie. And in the last seconds of her life she wondered who he truly was.
