A short story on Kairi and Sora, pre-Kingdom Hearts.

Fear

"AHHH! SORA! MAKE IT GO AWAY!"

Sora skidded around the corner, sliding on his socks, only to end up falling flat on his face and slamming into the wall.

He groaned, rubbed his chest, stood up, and began looking around wildly.

"What? Where?"

A flash of red, then she was hiding behind him.

"Get it...I can't go in there!" She whimpered.

Sora looked around. "What's in there?"

"S-Spider!"

It had been an average day at Sora's house, they had just been hanging out, and Kairi had went to his room to get a board game.

"Spider? How big?" Sora said with a relieved laugh, pushing open the door. A single spider, pale brown and gold, and about the size of a button was hanging from the ceiling. He snatched his wooden sword and struck at it, expertly cleaving it in half. He cleaned it up and tossed it in the trash.

"All better." He said cheerily.

Kairi laughed shakily, and Sora looked at her with a surprised expression. "I didn't know you were afraid of spiders."

"I am. Badly." She grinned, then shuddered. "The way they move and, and, and..." He eyes widened.

"What?"

"THERE'S ONE IN YOUR HAIR!" She rocketed around the corner, gone in an adrenaline rush.

Sora casually flicked the spider's mate out of his hair, grabbed his sword, and killed it too.

"Kairi," He soothed, coming back to her in the living room. "I got it."

Kairi scooted away from him, still laughing.

"Check yourself before you sit next to me." She said in a joking tone.

Sora did an exaggerated check of himself, then flopped down next to her. For some reason she started laughing, and Sora was so entranced by the sweet sound of it he started laughing too. She buried her face in his chest and laughed uncontrollably, and Sora wrapped his arms around her, caught in the moment.

That's how Riku found them.

"What exactly is so funny?" He said in confusion, his deep voice cutting through their laughter.

They stopped, looked at Riku, then started laughing harder.

Riku checked himself. "What? Is it my hair?"
The laughter continued and he made a face. Suddenly he grinned hugely.

"There's a spider on you, Kairi."

With a startled cry she leaped away from the couch, swatting at her clothes. "Get it off, get it off!"

Riku laughed, taking her arm. "I'm just joking."

Kairi huffed, turning away.

Sora stood up, glowering at Riku. Sora knew he just wanted to ruin the moment, because he wasn't part of it.

"Let's go to the beach." He suggested.

Riku nodded. "Good idea. I'll race you?"

Sora took Kairi's hand and was startled to see she was shaking slightly.

"Er, let's get something to eat first. Wow Kairi. Is your arachnophobia that bad?"

Riku stared at Kairi, and started apologizing frantically after seeing her shake. Then they realized why she was shaking.

She was laughing.

Silently.

Sora and Riku exchanged bewildered glances.
"What's so funny?" They both asked. But she shook her head and headed for the kitchen.
