Feena O'Malley was walking down the street one morning, blinking suddenly as rain started to pour down on her.
"I got it, Fee," said a cheerful voice from behind her. Feena smiled when her friend's umbrella was in her sight, rather than the rain. "Tony wouldn't want you to have runny makeup," she said with a laugh.
"Thanks, Leah," she said with an appreciative grin. "I was up really late; I had to calibrate something for my cousin. I guess I'm just sleepy," she explained.
"Oh, I heard there was going to be some new wimp at school today. Better wake up so we can people watch," Leah grinned at the thought. Feena offered a small smile.
"I'll be the 'new best friend,'" she replied, as they usually did. A car began to slow to a stop beside them, and the window rolled down.
"Pretty lady need a ride?" Tony asked, earning a wide grin from Feena.
"Well thank you, Tony," she replied, waving at Leah and getting into Tony's car. "See you at lunch, Leah!"
"Miss O'Malley, could you come to the office for a moment?" Mr. Fornell, the assistant principal, asked. "There's a new student I'd like for you to show the school to," he explained. Feena nodded and went with him.
She surveyed the teen, who was slightly shorter than her. She looked from his hair, to the small freckles on his nose, which were barely noticeable. He was standing awkwardly, looking around the room nervously. She knew what that was like.
"Are you—" she glanced at the slip of paper, "—Timothy McGee?" she asked. He nodded almost hesitantly. "Excellent. I'm Feena O'Malley, but you can call me Fee, Quincy, or Quince," she said.
"Um…you can call me, uh…Tim, Timothy, or McGee," he said. Feena smiled warmly.
"Well, let's start, shall we?" she asked, cracking a wide grin at his confused look. "The tour, Tim," she said. He paused, nodding after a moment. She first led him to his locker. "Mine is right down that hall if you need me."
Later that day, Tim and Feena were talking about computer models and their opinions on all of the things that could've gone wrong during Y2K, when she felt a pair of rough ands over her eyes.
"Tony!" she squealed, laughing as he uncovered them with a pout on his face.
"I didn't even get to say 'guess who,'" he said, defeated.
"Tony, this is Timothy McGee, he's new here," she said. He looked Tim over, and then looked from his girlfriend and back to Tim. He had a look that was a cross between laughter, and confusion.
"You guys look like you could be cousins! Look at that hair, man, and the freckles! But not much else could be relatable. You're too…I dunno, but I'm going to start calling you McGoo," he said. Tim's bewildered expression was all it took to make Feena burst out laughing. She hid her face in Tony's neck as she laughed. He grinned as he saw Tim walk away in a huff.
