Here it is folks. My first (technically third) attempt at a FullMetal Alchemist fanfic. After meeting the ever awesome Vic Mignogna, I fell in LOVE with this series. I'm a sucker for cannon couples so writing Royai seemed like a MUST as they are SO cute together.
Beware! My grammar sucks, despite being a frequent fanfic writer.
DISCLAIMER: Once again, not mine. SPOILERS for ep 25 of FMA and/or 10 of Brotherhood. The same thing happens but you may not have seen one of the series.I dunno.

He was trying. He was trying so damn hard. He should have known better.
Its a shame really. He'd always thought that working his way to the top would be easy with the support of close friends and he was only now realizing it now that there were so many obsticals he couldnt have seen.
Not until it was too late.
He was gone. His best friend for the better part of nine years. Damn fool had always prized photos of his wife and daughter, yet now they were all that was left of the man.
Maes Hughes.
Twenty-nine was far too young, military dog or not.
They'd served and survived Ishbal together, he'd been his best man at his wedding to Gracia, hell, he'd named Roy as his kids Godfather. Some godfather he was.
Roy stared bitterly at the brown liquer sat untouched before him. He was heavily intoxicated with no way of getting home and Chris was giving him looks. A familiar white coat was hung over the next stool as the owner sat beside him. Chris placed a glass in front of her.
"On the house, for coming so quick. Dont worry, its straight coke."
"Thanks Chris."
"Anytime Elizabeth." The pair sat in silence for a long while, consuming their individual beverages until Chris told them she was closing up. Together they stumbled to her car and prolonged the silence until they pulled up outside of his apartment.
"Roy? We're here."
"He's gone. Of the three of us, I could have sworn he'd live out his days with his family. I never once thought I'd out live the guy."
"We dont have the power to choose our end. Thats what makes surviving so hard." Roy sighed before making three feeble attempts to open the car door. When Riza opened it from the outside, the man nearly fell out. An arm around her shoulder, one around his waist, she slowly began dragging the colonel up to his apartment.
He fumbled for the key until the door finally opened but he didnt make a move to step inside.
"This wasnt your fault you know."
"Then why do I feel so damn guilty?"
"Roy..."
"He's had a wife and kid, so why him?" Tears had begun streaming down his cheeks. Riza had never seen him so vunerable before and it hurt to see him in so much pain. She closed the gap between them, gently wrapping her arms around his waist while coxing his head on to her shoulder where he quickly lost the little control had managed to maintain. When he pulled back many minutes later, his eyes held everything he couldnt put into words.
"Will...can you stay with me tonight? I dont want to be alone."
She took his hand in silent reply, allowing herself to follow him through the small apartment. They said nothing as he handed her a shirt and some clean shorts. When she returned from changing in the bathroom, he was laid in his side with his back to her. He made no noise but he heavily shaking shoulders told her that her sup- friend was crying again. Lifting the sheet, she climbed in, immediately wrapping her arms around him and resting her head against his back. She felt him take hold of her hand, sliding his fingers between hers.
Neither moved through the night. Looking at the young lieutenant the next morning while she offered him a small smile, he figuired out for the first time that maybe he didnt have to do this alone.
