A/N: I don't think Brennan got a proper melt-down after being buried. And I'm kind of disregarding Cam and Booth's relationship, or maybe they broke up during the case. I really don't care. It's not that I hate Cam, per say, but I don't like her with Booth. Basically is canon up until the moment Booth drags Brennan out of the ground, and then I take over.
DISCLAIMER!: I am in no way gaining money from writing this, and I have no ownership over the show or characters of Bones. Those go to FOX and Hart Hanson.
Dedication: To Nico-Maeglin, the one who convinced me to finish something and post it.
Booth led Brennan to his SUV, unconsciously angling himself to shield her. He looked to the ridges and hills of the quarry cautiously. Looking around as if looking for someone, as if someone might be there.
As if someone might be there.
Someone might be there.
Suddenly, she feels her legs giving out underneath her, and vaguely feels Booth jump up as not to land on her. She hears screechy sobs, and she feels them ripping from her throat. Booth is crouched beside her, his arms around her, his eyes wide and wondering.
"Bones! Bones, talk to me. Tell me what going on."
She looks up into Booth's eyes slowly, her own eyes wide in horror, terror clear in their icy blue depths.
"Tempe?"
"Don't let him get me again," she whispered.
She started to shake violently. Tears slid down her cheeks as she grabbed at the soil, trying to find a purchase.
He knows she is talking about the Gravedigger, and he can't begin to imagine how terrified she feels right now.
"Booth!" she screams, "Don't let him get me, please Booth!"
Out of the corner of his eye, Booth can see that Brennan's outburst has triggered a similar reaction in Hodgins, who is now shouting and yelling, flailing around as paramedics try to calm him. Angela is holding his hand tightly tears slipping out of her tightly clenched eyes.
Looking back at Brennan, he noticed that she had curled up, her hands twisted in her own hair, breathing heavily. He wrapped his arms around her thin frame and pulled her to his chest.
"Tempe, I promise he will never hurt you again. I promise I will never let the son of a bitch near you ever again. I'm here; I'll never leave you again."
She clutched to his jacket, pulling herself closer.
"I- I knew you would come," she sobbed, "Jack s-says I had f-aith in you."
"I know. I was never gonna give up."
Tears burned in his nose and eyes, but he refused to let them fall. He had to stay strong for Bones. He looked at her again, and they held each other's eyes as if the world was about to end. And in truth, it almost had. Dr. Temperance Brennan had almost lost her life, buried in her own car five feet under the ground. Special Agent Seeley Booth had almost lost his partner, his best friend, his everything. They looked in each other's eyes and knew. Knew the terror that had run through both their veins, and the unabashed relief that had overcame them when Booth had pulled her from that dirt, to see her breathing. Knew the love that they felt for each other, feelings that were also longing to be unburied.
Her breathing calmed, the shutters farther in between.
"You know," she whispered, a slight smile adorning her face, "it's okay to cry."
He laughed, the tears falling out of his eyes. He pressed a light kiss to her lips and rested his forehead against her's.
"I know."
