ANIMAL ARK: Insect with an Injury
'Oh James, isn't this the most special moment of your entire LIFE?' Mandy Hope exclaimed as she walked to school.
'Um. not really. We're only walking to school,' James replied doubtfully.
'But isn't it enchanting! Look, here are some bacteria on my arm. Aren't they CUTE?'
James just glanced at Mandy worriedly, when Mandy gave out a shrill cry.
'Oh! Oh oh no! Look! An insect - its leg is broken!' She rushed to the bush where she saw it and picked it up gingerly, displaying it to James.
'Mandy, it's gone nine o'clock, we'll be late for school -'
'Do you really want it to die?' Mandy was nearly in tears. 'Do you want to just leave it there, and know that your punctuality has cost a life? How could you live with that?' Tears were rolling down her cheeks. She took a tissue from her pocket and placed the insect on it.
'I think it is a flea,' she said in wonderment. She beamed at James, who was sitting on the roadside reading a book. This situation was very familiar to him.
'James! Stop being so insensitive and look! Oh, it might still be alive!' Suddenly, the flea jumped from the tissue onto the ground, no longer visible. Mandy looked stricken.
'James! We have to find that flea!' she said determinedly and got down on all fours with her nose nearly touching the ground.
James, sighing, knelt beside her and pretended to look. He coughed loudly and Mandy scolded him. 'We're going to have to tread carefully if we want to find this poor poor flea,' she hissed. 'It could be anywhere here. It can't have got far with that serious an injury.'
For several hours Mandy searched, never losing faith that she might still find it. James has long since stopped and started reading again, but Mandy was too wrapped up in the flea hunt to notice. She looked in all the cracks of the tarmac and in all the leaves of the bushes. Suddenly she had an idea.
'James! We could use our bikes! We could ride on them to speed things up!' her eyes were wild with pleasure.
Just then, a police officer came up behind them and enquired as to why they weren't at school. James scampered, leaving Mandy to deal with him.
'I was looking for a flea,' she said defiantly. 'I think it might be hurt.'
The policeman looked at her oddly. 'Where do you live?'
'The veterinary practice,' Mandy said.
'I see. Well, come with me.'
They walked off, talking about the merits of flea breeding. By now the sun was setting and the town looked magical. The quest for the flea had begun.
