Newkirk had climbed out of the tunnel into danger so many times before. And each time he did his heart rose into his throat, and remained there for a long time. This mission was no different.
Each step he took towards the inevitable climb into the darkness seemed to bring him closer to the end of his sanity. When he took one last look into the Colonel's eyes, and saw his feelings mirrored back at him, he nearly went over the edge. Was he afraid of dying? Yes and no. Death didn't frighten him. But never seeing Hogan again did.
