Chapter 1
Just one more breath. A deep breath, I said to myself trying yet again to convince me that it was a good idea.
You could always not do it, a little voice said inside my head. And it was true. I don't know what had gotten in to me, all those thoughts that kept coming back to me every once and again about being normal now seemed ridiculous. Like I could ever be normal! Like I could ever avoid bringing disaster along anywhere I went. It sure was a good idea to move frequently because it was more difficult to be traced, but school?
Really? How selfish was that? And how stupid of me ?
Well, now that you're here you might as well give it a go, the little voice said.
Well, another go to be precise.
How much fuss can there be about a new student? Not as much as would be made over a mysterious neighbour I guess. It was one and the same. The trick was that same to be as little as possible. Of course I could just make myself invisible but I had discovered many years earlier that such a spell, cast for a long time was easily traceable.
How I missed acting normal! Actually socializing with people my age (technically not possible), people without a care in the world, whose only problems seemed to be prom, homework and college.
I looked around. Such a moody little town. Green mush seemed to cover everything that wasn't concrete and sometimes that too. Grey sky and drizzling all the time. Might as well have been London if it hadn't been for all the mush. I liked it though. The aura of loneliness and quiet the town had reminded me of myself, and somewhere behind the irony of that fact I found it to be peaceful.
I guess since I was there already, dressed and all, I could give this town a shoot. Give myself a shoot at this new life, thought doubtful that it would work out, as it never did through the ages.
I breathed deeply for the last time so my nerves would calm and looked ahead. Someone had tried very hard to make the school look cheerful, but the bright orange the building once was had worn out in a sort of nutshell color as dull as the grey sky above. Leaving the bike behind me in the parking lot I moved towards the building to where I hoped the secretary was.
Inside thing weren't as bad. The atmosphere was warmer and the color on the walls wasn't as worn out. I moved towards the big desk in the middle of the hall and the middle-aged brunette behind it. She had a magazine at hand and chewing the end of a pencil. Brushing through her thoughts quickly I could tell it was a profoundly easy crossword and from the look on her face she was going to mule over it for the rest of the day.
"Hello? I am Bella Swan, I am new here."
"Oh, hello darling, how are you? Welcome to Forks High. "
Her voice was high pitched and she seemed kind of annoyed by my presence. I guess I interrupted the crossword. Probably my arrival was the most exciting thing that happened to that place in the past 10 years and that explained her mildly intrigued expression.
Quickly putting aside the crossword she went through some file and handed me a piece of paper with my schedule on it.
"Here is your schedule for the day, sweetie. Anything you need I'd be happy to help you."
See didn't really seem to mean that, and from what I could tell, her thoughts were on the magazine as soon as she took her eyes from me.
"Thank you", I murmured, thought I doubt she heard it.
