"Somebody's down here." Daniel's nervousness shows. His little secret hiding place was already discovered by the Feds, who else is lurking in the shadows?
"You stay with him. I'll check it out." Ryan tells Mike. He's always the one going, the one chasing, the one checking it out. Mike stands by the door, always keeping watch.
"He's going to find you."
Mike snaps his head in Daniel's direction, trying not to let shock show on his face. There's no way Daniel knows about Mike's anxiety, his increasing panic attacks, ever since his abduction. Daniel doesn't know about how Joe Carroll comes for him at night, how he hears his voice in his head at the most inconvenient times. Did you really think you could keep my own wife from me? Ridiculous.
Mike's heart skips a beat before galloping full speed ahead, and the blinking red light is now giving him a headache. His usual hyper sensitive hearing is compromised; he doesn't think he could hear an oncoming train through the sound of blood rushing in his ears. For a second, his view of the room tilts dangerously to the left. Mike closes his eyes to regain his composure and forces himself to swallow past the lodge in his throat.
When he opens his eyes again Daniel is gone, and Mike brings his gun up immediately back to full alert. But he isn't fast enough, never fast enough, strong enough, smart enough, because now he feels metal against the back of his neck and he wonders how Daniel knew. And how he was stupid enough not to believe him.
