They still lived in the brownstone. Over the years it became less sparse as they rearranged and shared and made it theirs. It became their constant. They worked and they traveled and when they returned they were home.

They used to think that love was senseless.

They both had relationships that had changed them, for the better and for the worse…in the end they felt that love came at too high a cost.

But what they had stemmed from something deeper than attraction and affection…it was deeply rooted in trust and understanding.

It grew slowly, over time. Once it blossomed they couldn't deny it. They took it in and nurtured it until it became the most natural part of their lives.

It was a quick kiss before her morning run and a protein shake ready when she returned. It was his TVs set to the preferred channels and the remotes lined up by his chair. It was how they woke each other in the middle of the night to talk or to say nothing at all because they just couldn't wait.

It was how she constantly challenged him. It was how he constantly surprised her.

One morning over breakfast she asked him what he'd like to do that day. He sipped his coffee without looking up from the article he was reading and said that he did have an idea he'd like to propose to her.

And so he did.

She was momentarily stunned, but accepted his proposal without a second thought.

They shared a piece of cake in bed that night. Everything was much the same, except there was a new plaque on the wall and matching rings on their fingers.

She kept her name. He'd have it no other way.

They were Holmes and Watson. Watson and Holmes.

Together they made sense.
