Fred Weasley decided that if he was going to die trapped in an elevator, at least it was with a cute girl. There was no better time than the present to make his move; the intercom had said that they might be stuck in there for an hour.

Fred waved to the girl, looking her up and down, at her bushy brown hair, and her little smile. She waved back, giving him a smile and a nod.

Okay, Fred thought. Good start.

"What's your name?" he called over. She didn't answer, so he repeated the question, a little bit louder. She didn't answer again, though, so he waved a hand to her to grab her attention. Once she was looking at him, he asked for a third time, "What's your name?"

She laughed and shook her head, mouthing something that he couldn't catch.

"What?" he said, confused. The girl pointed one finger at herself, then at her jaw, and then at her ear.

"I don't know what type of charades this is. I have no idea what you're trying to tell me," he told her, adding as an afterthought, "I'm Fred."

She just stared at him, then did a flurry of hand motions: a fist circling her heart, pointing to herself again, one of her pointer fingers striking the other, two fingers circling her mouth. Then she paused for a moment and laughed, before making an 'X' with her index fingers, separating them, pointing at him, touching all of her fingers to her forehead before moving them away, circling her index fingers around each other, and making two 'L's bouncing away from each other with her fingers.

"What?" Fred sputtered, wondering what the hell she was trying to say. Still, he had lost of optimism in him, so he shook himself a little bit and said again, quieter, "What?"

The girl rolled her eyes and then started looking in her purse for something, bringing out a pen and a receipt. She beckoned Fred closer, then began to write on it.

I'm deaf, she scribbled in big loopy letters.

"Obviously!" Fred exclaimed, smacking himself on the forehead. He really wasn't the brightest sometimes, he supposed. "I'm a genius. Well, then."

Fred stood back, prepared to mime to her. He pointed one finger at her and then winked while making a 'perfect' sign with his fingers, his index finger and thumb touching, with his other fingers extended.

The girl smirked and pointed to herself before making the same 'perfect' sign. She smiled before touching her index and middle fingers to her thumb twice, pointed at herself, and made an 'L' with one of her hand, the thumb extending and retracting.

Fred wasn't religious, but he was still praying to God to somehow make him understand what this girl was saying.

"What's your name?" he said again, this time spreading his arms out and pointing at her. The girl just shook her head, looking really confused.

Fred was about to try again, but then the elevator gave a jolt and started to move again.

He decided on one last attempt, pointing to himself, then to her, then making kissing motions with his hands while winking. He was probably coming off as really sleazy.

The girl just rolled her eyes before taking another receipt out of her bag and writing something. As the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened, she got off, handing Fred the paper.

It read a phone number, next to a name: Hermione.

"Score!"
