A/N: This was something that had popped into my head while I had been contemplating the Paper Mario games.

She tried not to let terror wash through her body as the windstorm of power closed in on her. She tried not to shiver at its alien touch, filled with promises of power and security. She could feel it, invading her very being—gently at first, as if to ease her into surrender. But she thrashed against its caress with every fiber of her being.

Dimly, through the haze of shadow, she could make out her hero—the man she wasn't so sure could save her this time. Ice-cold fear consumed her, clouding her thoughts, her vision. Her sight grew dimmer. She could vaguely hear the triumphant call of the alien being whom had started this nightmare. She could hear the cackling of those dark wenches. But it was growing soft, until all she could hear was the siren call of the misty figure dancing in her mind.

That shadow, with her frozen lips and silvery hair.

"Yield to me, and I will make you a goddess to be feared and known across the world!"

"No!" She screamed lividly, her tears the only sign of her weakness.

The shadow moved to her front, her smile deceiving in its warmth and comfort. No one could hear the terror wrenched from her lungs painfully at the sight which met her gaze.

A face, so like her own, but sunken and dead. She could make out each of the shadow's features. Her cheeks had once been soft, her lips were once her own, small and pink. But she had no eyes. Instead, purple, veiny flesh stretched over her sockets surreally.

"I have been asleep for so long. I long for the light!"

A cool hand touched her cheek, hesitant in its plea.

"Will you not let me wake from this abysmal state?"

She saw the sadness in her soul, so openly on display for her to touch and feel.

"And what is to become of me?" She was meek, ashamed at how quickly she was moved to pity this poor creature.

"Do not worry, maiden. I will protect you. And you will protect me."

She tried not to shiver as she was encompassed by the shadow's embrace.

Being a girl who so often needed rescue, her being was filled with joy, knowing that she had just rescued someone else.
