Sirius tickles his chin with his quill, thinking hard. Dear Sanvitti, will you go to the Christmas Ball with me?But it doesn't sound quite ... right. It doesn't sound special enough. Nothing Sirius can come up with is special enough for a girl like Sanvitti Patil.
"Why are you even writing a letter anyway, Sirius?" asks James, leaning over Sirius' shoulder. "Is that a love letter?"
"Shut up, James."
"Come on, I didn't know you were into being so romantic. Love letters, of all things. Do it the Marauders' way!"
Sirius raises his eyebrows, casting a skeptical glance at James. "Which is basically showing off as much as possible in front of the girls until they notice us, am I correct?"
"Well, yeah."
Sirius snorts, turning back to his blank parchment. "Been there, done that. Sanvitti doesn't notice. She's always got her head in a book and chatting with the people from her writing challenge club and the book club thing."
"You could always just set your sights higher, you know. A girl who thinks books are more interesting than we are can't be good news. She's probably gay or something."
The parchment looks so lonely and empty. Sirius shakes his head at James and dips his quill in the ink-pot. "I heard her talking about that fifth-year Percy guy* with her friends. She's straight, okay, I have a chance."
James simply looks amused as he watches Sirius write 'Dear Sanvitti' down. "Good luck, then, my friend. Although like I said, a girl who isn't interested in us -"
"James, butt out of this. Sanvitti's more than she seems."
His friend smirks. "Says someone who hasn't even spoken to her before."
"... Shutup."
"Whatever. Good luck, then, fellow Marauder, and may the odds be ever in your favour." James pats his friend's shoulder and leaves him to his writing.
Sirius sighs and gets back to his letter.
