"Promise me, Tessa".
"I promise." she said shakily. Tears dripped onto her lap and she clung to Jem's hand like it was a lifeline.
"Wo ai ni." He murmured.
His grip slackened. The light died from his eyes.
Jem.

She woke, sobbing uncontrollably.
He was never coming back.
There would be no more walks on the bridge, looking out at the water, laughing quietly, her head tucked under his chin.
He wouldn't glance at her anymore over the heads of the other Shadowhunters, as they shared a silent joke.
He was really gone.
It took her a a few moments before she realised that someone was holding her in the dark.
"Tess. Tess." Will whispered against her hair. She buried her face in his shoulder as she tried to stop the the tears streaming down her face. She felt wetness against her cheek that wasn't her own and knew that he was crying too.
"Why Will? Why Jem?" She asked despairingly.
He stayed silent, unable to answer.
