His brain was other places today. The misty fog that hugged the ground and the constant sounds of water falling over the land made his mind wander and he began to think about his life and what it would accumulate to in the end. He would always try to remind himself that he had a reason to live, but recently had been struggling to find out just what exactly kept him from giving up and giving in. Very deep thoughts for a person, but it was just that kind of personality that got the attention of his partner, Dana Scully.
Scully, herself, had been having a horrible day, and it seemed that nothing could cheer her up. A grim scowl covered her face as she sighed inwardly at having to do all of the paperwork in this department that didn't have to do with aliens, which would be the audit report, since she had an idea that Mulder hadn't gotten anywhere on it. She tried to think of simple, happy moments that made life worth living and would help to bring her up from her bad mood. She imagined herself as a child wondering what her life would be like this far. She would have NEVER guessed that this would be where she had landed. 'Landed' was the wrong word, she thought. Sure she had landed there, but there was nothing to stop her from leaving if she was unhappy or unsatisfied. There had always been some…thing that made it possible for her to stay. A reason why she decided not to leave and go another path. Beginning a career in medical science and abandoning it for…what? She didn't even know what or why anymore. It was more apparent to her why she wanted to stay earlier in her career with the FBI, but somehow she had pushed all of her thoughts of anything other than work out of her head and out of her grasp.
His eyebrows scrunched together slightly while he was trying to come to a conclusion. What would his life equal out to? Who would still need him? Why would he matter? Who would he regret leaving behind?
Suddenly, she realized that she had spaced out, and shook herself out of her reverie. She wondered for an instant what Mulder would think when he looked at Scully: Frigid Ice Queen, staring absentmindedly out into space. A blush painted her neck and cheeks but disappeared when she glanced over at Mulder, who was looking out at the rain, and realized that he couldn't have noticed. She collected herself enough to pretend that she had been diligently working the whole time and looked over at Mulder again. She watched him for a short while with her head cocked a little to the side before her stare bore into Mulder's thoughts and he turned from the window to meet her gaze.
Mulder gave her the slightest smile, just enough so that you could tell. Scully smiled softly back at him with her head still slightly tilted.
It was at that precise moment that they found the answers to all of their questions. They could both go on without worrying whether anyone still cared or what is was that kept them there. It was all there, in less than a smile.
