Luffy let his straw hat fell over his eyes, then lifted it up blinking before letting it drop again. On lifted it up another time, he left it at that and glanced over to his brother Sabo. The blonde hair boy was leaning over a box, with a quill pen in hand.
Luffy stood and walked over, glancing at what was on the box. A piece of paper. Sabo was writing something down, very neatly at that. He blinked at the words, wondering what they meant. He had never learnt to read or write and had not the clue that it all was about.
"Sabo is writing fun?" Luffy asked as he stood next to the older boy.
"For me yes." Sabo answered but did not look his way, "I find it lot of fun when words come together turn into sentences and then into understanding."
"Understanding?" Luffy said with a frown as he looked up to the ceiling of their home they build in the tree, thinking about what Sabo had said. "I don't understand." He admitted to his brother as he gazed up down at the words that were forming from the ink.
"Do you know how to read Luffy?" Sabo asked as he lifted his head and stared at his younger brother for the first time since they returned home with the pen, paper and ink bottle.
"No." Luffy said with a grin as he looked up to him, "Why is reading fun too?"
"Yeah," Sabo said, he seemed very surprised that Luffy could not read, "Luffy can you don't read at all? Anything?"
"No." Luffy replied still grinning at him, and turned back to the piece of paper. "Is reading important?"
"Mmm...yes. And it is fun, depending on what you are reading." Sabo explained, he allowed a smile to appear as he thought of something. "Luffy would you like to learn?"
Luffy turned to the hole in the wall they called a window, even though it had no glass, staring at the heavy wind and rain. Seeing that there was nothing to do today, he face Sabo again and with a bright smile nodded his head.
"Oh no Luffy," Sabo said as his smile spread into a grin, "This is not a one day thing. Reading and writing is something that has to be taught over a course of time. We should start with the basic today and starting tomorrow spend ten minutes a day on reading, writing and spelling."
"Spelling?" Luffy asked with a frown, "What's that?"
"Don't worry, I am going to teach you everything!" Sabo said looking happy to share his knowledge with his younger brother. Luffy seemed to like doing things with Ace since they had the same mind set on things, and did not have any interest in Sabo's hobbies and pass time.

Luffy blinked down at the paper and pen on the table, Nami was asking him what he wanted to write down.
"I can write it myself." Luffy said as he reached over and took the pen and paper away from her, before she could say anything.
"Luffy no," Nami said as she tried to reached for the paper, but he got out of his seat and walked down to a further seat on the dinning table. "I don't want to have to try and work out what you writing."
She got up and saw that it was too late, Luffy had already began to scrabble down words on the paper. Sighing she glanced over his shoulder and stared in shock at how neat Luffy's hand writing was. Not only that it was spelling big words, that she did not even think he could say.
"Shishishishi~" Luffy snickered as he finished and handed back the paper. Luffy was proud to be able to read, write and spell; it was a gift from Sabo.
