Randy Orton sat backstage with Cody Rhodes nursing a bloody lip. There was an awkward silence between them.
"Randy…" Cody began.
"Shut up," Randy replied sharply. "If you wanna go join Ted do it now. I'm gonna kill him, and if you're not with me, you're against me."
"Don't worry, I'm with you…" Cody said. He felt just as betrayed as Randy did. He still didn't believe Ted would do such a thing… "What's our plan?"
"We wait. Then we hurt him so bad he can't come back. We put him out of commission." Cody nodded. Nobody crossed Randy Orton and got away with it.
"Randy?" Cody asked after a moment.
"What?"
"What… happened, exactly?" Randy gave an angry sigh.
"He asked you to help him, right?" Cody nodded hesitantly. "But you told him no. So he had to get you out of his way. When I went out for my match, he knocked you out. And then he came down and pretended to help when Batista was a little too much to handle. And when we had him down, he hit me with a chair."
"…Then what?" Randy's face scrunched up into a grimace.
"He told me I was right… he DID make a mistake. He wasn't going to be a Randy Orton lackey anymore. And then he slapped me and walked off."
"I just don't get it… Why'd he do it?" Cody asked. Teddy was his best friend. They were like brothers, and Randy was their mentor.
"Me neither kid," Randy said. Triple H and Shawn Michaels laughed as they walked over to the pair.
"Didja hear that, Shawn?" Hunter asked. "He doesn't understand why ole Teddy left Legacy." Any other time Randy would have attacked them, but the only man he felt like hurting right then was Theodore Marvin DiBiase Jr.
"I've been gone since April and I see it," Shawn replied.
"What are you talking about?" Randy asked.
"Let's think back to a time when you were a young, more impressionable Legend Killer," Hunter said. "Back in the Evolution days. And before that little mishap with the title, you looked up to me, didn't you?"
"I NEVER looked up to you!" Randy snarled. But everyone knew that wasn't true.
"Ok, well, once we get past your denial, you hated me after I betrayed you, didn't you?"
"What's your point, I never did ANYTHING like that to DiBiase!"
"Ohh, but you did," Shawn said.
"Everyone sees it, that kid idolized you. He learned from you, he wanted to be just like you. After he was in Legacy a while he started to act like you, and fight like you, and it was kinda creepy. And then you told him that he was just a henchman. And after you beat him in your match, it subdued him a little, but then he started to realize that you weren't everything he used to think you were. So he waited for his chance, and he took it. You might say that Cody Rhodes is your student, the guy who's gonna take up your mantle when you're gone, but he's just the lackey. He's the guy who just takes orders." Cody looked a little offended but didn't say anything because he knew it was true. "But Teddy, Teddy was that guy. You had the perfect guy to have your back, and you threw it all away because you didn't take the time to appreciate it." He shook his head and walked away.
"Don't listen to him, Randy…" Cody said. But Randy was silent. He realized that it was true, and after all the things he had done, after the way he treated Ted… he lost much more than a henchman.
He lost a protégé.
