DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR

Chapter One

The Birthday

Dudley Dursley awoke with a start on the morning of his twelfth birthday. He had been having one of those disorienting dreams about falling, and just as he hit the ground, he jolted awake. His room, and the house, were silent. It was five o'clock. No one was awake yet.

Dudley Dursley hated his name. He especially hated being called Dudders, and other silly nicknames like that, but he did not hate his mother for calling him by them. She was too affectionate to know how indignifying they sounded, and he had come to terms with this as long as she didn't do it in front of his friends. Of course, he couldn't keep her from doing it in front of his cousin Harry, because he lived with them.

Harry Potter was a year younger than Dudley, and an orphan. For quite a long time Dudley had not felt the least bit sorry for him for having lost his parents in a car crash, feeling that it was too good a fate for such a nasty, sneaking little git, but recently he had begun to realize that Harry might be that way because he had no parents. Dudley almost forgave him on that grounds—almost. Old resentments die hard though—Harry had been snitching on and tormenting him for years, long before Dudley truly understood what it meant to be orphaned.
