Disclaimer: Pretear does not belong to me. Doesn't that suck?

Notes: I finally got around to checking out the manga (having seen the anime five years ago) and damn, I became a total Sasame fangirl. I had to write something for him. Hopefully I got him right.

Sometimes Sasame wished he had never been born a leafe knight. Being a knight meant living a life of selflessness. Knights always had to make their princess happy and could never think about themselves. It was the only way to live. Any other life was impossible for a leafe knight.

Yet he cherished his position. Without it, he would have never met the princess he now protected. Himeno. Adorable and caring Himeno. He would do anything for her. Not only because he was a knight and she was his princess he had sworn to protect, but because she was Himeno Awayuki. He loved her. He loved her in every way possible and giving his life to her was something he did without wanting his freedom back. What was freedom compared to a life full of Himeno?

Yet without freedom, he couldn't do a thing. One of his jobs was to make Himeno happy.

And she was happy with Hayate. He was not Hayate. He was Sasame.

Himeno loved Hayate, Hayate loved Himeno. She couldn't love him the way he wanted and there was nothing he could do. He was Sasame, Himeno's Knight of Sound. Pledged to do anything to protect her, to make her happy. So he did nothing and smiled.

He smiled when they first kissed, he smiled when he realized how serious they were about each other, and he smiled when he walked in on them making out. He smiled every single time he saw them. Wearing that smile was almost painful for Sasame. It almost physically hurt him to keep doing it. But it made Himeno happy even though he was sure his heart broke more and more at every cheerful moment Hayate brought from their princess. Even though he was sick of smiling and sick of being nothing but a big brother to her. He wanted more. So much more…

He did not have the freedom to get more. He could do nothing but smile and be happy for her.

She would come crying to him, needing his sweet advice because Hayate had just been a jerk again and she just wasn't sure she could keep the relationship going. He wanted nothing more than to tell her to forget Hayate and kiss her. Show her how much she was loved by him and how he would never hurt her because he just loved her too much for that.

But he would not do that. Himeno still loved Hayate and even if he was bad at showing it, Hayate loved Himeno and Sasame knew he loved her just as much as he did.

His duty as a knight…and as a friend…would always come first. No matter what.

And that was the only time Sasame thought freedom sounded just a little bit more beautiful.
