He, She and Them, by AdeleParker
Hello readers! I hope you'll enjoy this new, and short fic, not as fluffy as my others. I was working on You Are The Best Thing but couldn't get the idea for this fic out of my head. So here you go. And as for YATBT, well thank you so much to those you keep reviewing, and asking for new chapters. It's very encouraging and it should come, eventually... ^^
May I suggest a soundtrack for this fic: Emiliana Torrini, Beggar's prayer www(.)youtube(.)com/watch?v=m4oYrmjHmHE
Now on with the show. And don't forget to review. ;)
She knew a lot of people thought they belonged together, his daughter for one. She could see it in their eyes, in their smiles when they looked at them both. Like they knew something he and she didn't. Well they didn't, they didn't know anything. He and she on the other hand, they knew what they had, what it was and what it wasn't. Just because they didn't have a word for it didn't mean it didn't exist. They were so much more than friends, but they were never meant to be romantic. As much as they loved each other, because god knew they did.
But all of these people who thought that they knew better, none of them knew the truth. He and she too, at one point of their lives, they had thought that what they had might have been love. The love. The one you only hear about in books or in films. Ulysses and Penelope's kind of love. They had taken a chance. Because who in their right mind pass on their chance at that one kind of love? Of course there had been guilt, and sneakiness. But where there should have been passion, and desire, and love, and just them, there had been awkwardness, distrust and doubts. So much of it, still weeks in their relationship.
They had both agreed to end that romance, to draw some kind of line. Somehow, the bond they shared had become stronger still. They had got closer now that their bodies were keeping a respectable distance. They were in each others lives, for better or for worse, probably till death do them part. What a blessing, and what a curse. Since he and she had exchanged a piece of their hearts, no man, no woman could ever claim to own it. No one could get as emotionally close to one of them as he and she were. They would never be able to belong completely to someone, as they were linked so profoundly. But they knew they would never be alone as long as they had each other.
So yeah. They could think what they wanted. But she knew. She knew that they might be the closest two people on earth. She also knew what it meant. She was fine with it. She was not Penelope, or Juliet, or Rose, or Scarlet, or whoever. That was fine too. She was his the ways that mattered the most. She loved him and he loved her. They were just never meant to be lovers. She knew that.
However, sometimes he would stare at her in a certain way, his look one of lustful appreciation, or he would cup her cheek and seek her eyes, his face filled with caring tenderness. These times, she wasn't sure he knew anymore.
