Loss

Disclaimer: Suprise, suprise: Not Mine.Shocking isn't it?

A/N: I think this concept has been done before but I don't read much Yuffie (bratty little girl who stole my materia! Never liked her very much in the game) so here it is Calm-style.

No one likes to be alone. It's a fear which drives people all their lives. Infants die from lack of physical contact, even if all their other needs are met. People cling to even unhealthy relationships with all their strengths because even if it isn't always good at least it's contact.

It lets them know they're alive.

Without the contact of another human, men have been known to go insane. Those who fear the loss cling even closer. The cynical simply seek to control when the loss will occur, deciding that even if they must lose it at least it will be lost on their terms.

It was something Yuffie Kisaragi, the Flower of Wutai, understood best.

No one had said 'No' to Yuffie, no matter what she wanted. If it was someone else's boyfriend, puppy, necklace, weapon, even friend no one refused her what she wanted. After all, she was the Princess of Wutai, the daughter of Lord Godo.

No one dared refuse her.

But little had ever held her attention for long, life always supplied something or someone else more interesting or shinier. Yuffie had never lost anything she wanted, anyone she wanted, merely left it behind, and abandoned it.

Yuffie had never feared the loss of human contact. Everyone was there when she wanted them, when she needed them.

But even the privileged, even the Flower of Wutai must learn of loss.

Fate made up for her earlier kindness, sending Death for Yuffie's mother and Despair for Godo. In one day Yuffie had lost the two most important people in her young life.

The Flower of Wutai, who none had refuse, none had dared, was now refused by her own father.

But things had never failed Yuffie. And what she wanted she would take. Things became her contact to others.

Her touchstone.

It allowed her to be the one who left them behind. No one and nothing would refuse Yuffie Kisaragi.

Until she met those who did. The strange group who wouldn't let her leave them behind like so many others had. This group could keep up. They became the real, human contact she feared losing so much she would willingly sacrifice it as long as she could control when it went.

But Yuffie is forever testing, waiting for the one day they will not keep up. The one day they will fail her as all the others have. But even then she will know the contact existed, and that she was the one to end it.

But their material will never fail her.

It can't leave her without her permission. It can't die.

That's the kind of control Yuffie wants the most, even if the contact isn't human. At least she can have a part of everyone she had taken from.

Then she won't be alone.

Or so she thinks.

The End
