Puppet No More

Prompt: Quite difficult...

A/N: For LJ.

The last thing they needed was to be found out.

Everything, that which they'd worked so hard to keep hidden, would only be broken if he found them out. Not only would embarrassment ensue, but severe reparation. But that was the least of her fears. Despite his protests, she was smart enough to see through them, having read up on how some people reacted to the truth. Some would casually deflect it, while others would mask it with anger. Her captain was the latter.

But it was to be expected. He wouldn't at all be pleased to find out that she'd fooled him, her creator, let alone that she'd engaged herself with one of the few who were loyal to him. He'd hate every aspect of the situation, and would try to break it down.

Still, it was bittersweet, this feeling. Frightening and welcoming, topped evenly with a light sprinkle of excitement. It was new and it was different. And she wanted it to last.

It had started by accident. She'd always wondered why she felt weak when he was around, even if she were only close to him for a moment during equipment inspections and the like. She'd asked around about it, and had been given the same answer by Matsumoto and the others: "Just say something to him. What's the worst that can happen?"

She'd taken that advice, and had awkwardly told him that she believed herself to have feelings for him. Everything that had happened after that fact had been a joy. Whether it was some flaw in her design or something that had lay dormant within her, she didn't know. It was like that story she'd been told, the one from the living world, of a boy who wanted nothing more than to become real. It was very well possible that such a tale could be true, but she didn't know.

All that she knew was that there was a first time for everything.
