Chapter one:

A snake in the lions den

'Susan Bones' screeched a voice, but I could not see the owner, just the frightened little girl who step forward and place the hat on her head.

'Hufflepuff' it yelled only seconds later.

'Lucky' I muttered.

'Draco Malfoy' shouted the bodiless voice, I felt him push past me and strut down the hall, through the group of nervous and faceless people who parted like the red sea.

I became transfixed by the hat. Its empty, bottomless eyes focused as they stared painfully at Malfoy. I would be scared to if I could see into every corner of Draco's mind. To see all that he has done and all that he will do. My farther says he has a dark gift…

I call it evil, people generally prefer my version.

The hat loitered above his head, as if it was gasping at its last breaths of air before it was forced to enter the labyrinth of Draco's thoughts.

It began to descend.

'Slytherin' it roared. I could see the ill-placed sense of pride that spread across his face like a disease, as he took his first steps on his new path, I watched darkness consume him.

'Oleander Malfoy' the voice boomed once more, I froze at my own name as I realised for a precious few moments I was allowed to forget that I was like him...

Doomed.

I pigeon-toed my through the crowd refusing to maintain eye contact I stared at the hard, oak floor instead. I felt their stares burn into the back of my head like fire, the only relief came when the hat was placed upon my head.

'Another Malfoy' it hissed in my ear. I shut my eyes. I was not going to participate in a conversation with a hat!

'You can shut your eyes, but you can not close of your thoughts'

My mouth could only twitch; no words could be formed as the hat continued to feed off my mind.

'You are different…' the hat began 'but you name tells me who and what you are!'

I shut my eyes tighter.

'Your mind is light but you name is dark' whispered the hat

'Face your path!' It turned my head to face the Slytherin's but they were consorted and dark, I could feel the hate that consumed and surrounded them.

They were no longer human.

The hat cackled in my ear, my mind fought against his clutches, my tongue waged war against my lips…

'NO!'

I through my body forward, hitting a wall of flesh that proceeded to enclose around me. My eyes shot open as my gazed danced around the room attempting realise my surroundings.

'It's ok Oleander, it's ok…' soothed the wall of flesh, I began to wrestle against it but my eyes thought better then my body as they focused and forced the wall to take shape.

A shape I recognised, a shape I loved.

'Raven?'

I stretched my arms over her slender back, pulling her closer like a child that pulled at their favourite toy. I allowed my head to drop onto her shoulder, her black hair clashed against my blond.

My only Malfoy trait she had joked.

The tears rolled down my face and hit Raven's shoulder like bricks that fell on fresh grass.

She hugged me tighter.

'Hush you're safe now hush… you're not like them' she said letting her hand stoke my hair, following it down my back.

I glanced up, hardly seeing though my tears but I could recognised the red and yellow tie abandoned on the floor, the occupied beds scattered around the room, the red trimmed robe hanging vicariously from a chair…

'You are different…'

I clung to Raven as she was a life boat, realising that I was a Malfoy I allowed my fears to consume me.
