those glittering lights, those beautiful nights

The downfall of the would-be queen bee, Massie Block, did not come as a surprise to anyone—friends, enemies, those neutral folk on the team of the in-between—so it was hardly a shock from the blue that she was one of those that did not top the guest list of Alicia Rivera's This Is It Senior Class Holiday Bash. Of course, Massie Block pretended that she didn't care that she wasn't the top girl at Octavian County Day anymore, but there was a pang of hurt that she felt from not even being invited by her old best friend. Teenage girls were such cruel, fickle being that were hardly ones to be considerate of the feelings of the people whom they deemed as their foes, including their old best friends.

"Don't think about it," Danny Robbins, a Briarwood hotshot, told her as they sat beside each other on a park bench, with snow falling all around them and lights shining brightly against the darkened skies of the night. "Alicia's just out to get you because she still sees you as a threat."

"Easy for you to say," Massie replied sulkily, swatting Danny's shoulder gently. "You did get invited to the party!"

"Party's hardly matter, Mass. And we both know that the only reason she even thought about inviting me is because she knew that it would get to you, and this is exactly the reaction from you that she wanted to extract," said Danny as he grabbed her hands and looked at her, his piercing green eyes boring into the depths of her amber orbs. He smiled at her teasingly. "Can't I just be enough company for you?"

Massie was not-so-well aware of the secret crush that the young Danny Robbins was harbouring on her little lost soul. He adored the way she bit her lip as she thought about things and the lovely way that she cared so much about the little things. Everything about her just seemed so darn adorable and it was difficult for Dany to be such a close friend of hers and not fall in love with her. She confided in him with every piece of her heart and soul-he had been there through every heartache, every mistake, and just everything that could ever go wrong in a young teenage girl's life.

"Oh, posh, Danny." Though the word "posh" did usually mean something along the lines of "fancy" or "exquisite," Massie found that it was a good term to use when she was frustrated. She was the ladies-should-not-swear-because-it's-rude girl kind of person and she never hesitated to show it (which, of course, was another thing that Danny just loved about her).

Rolling his eyes at her, Danny whispered in her ear, "Let me be enough for you."

Falling in love is just that-falling. It's hard to be stop, difficult to get yourself back up, and it varies in all people. She did not know it, but Massie had been falling in love with the hotshot of a Briarwood boy for a long time. She knew every nook and crannie of his mind and could tell who he was out of a million people if she was blinded and could only feel the touch of his fingers. He was her confidant, her lifeline, her best friend. She did not know how hard she had fallen for him until his whispered words sent shivers down her spine. He'd said such things before, but it was really the tone of his voice that got to her; he sounded relaxed, but he had the sound of yearning in his voice that she seemed to be drawn to; he sounded like he needed himself to be enough for her, like she was all that mattered right then and there, and not Alicia Rivera's stupid party.

In that instant with those glittering lights and, yes, those beautiful nights, Massie Block allowed Danny Robbins to lift her chin and kiss her.

It was like nothing she'd ever felt before.
