Falling
"Sometimes you can't help which way you fall"
Alex walked slowly down the corridor, letting her fingers slide along the sides of the walls. It was real, she knew it was real, but there was something missing. She needed to be home with Molly. But she needed to be here with Gene, Chris, Shaz and Ray. Her mind wheeled with a hundred sudden different theories, a hundred different paths. She didn't know which way was home anymore.
"BOLLY! When you're quite finished feeling up the walls, we've got a case to solve!" Genes bellowing orders echoed down towards her, Ray and Chris dawdling next to him. Alex looked up, smiling.
"Ok, Guv. What have we got this time?" She walked quickly to his side, following him closely towards the red shining Quattro.
The door slammed shut. As soon as it did, Gene put his foot down, tearing away down the road, skidding skilfully round the corners, throwing Alex against the car door, then against himself. Alex felt the car shudder slightly, Genes foot releasing the pressure on the accelerator. She looked up from being pressed against his arm, staring up into his silvery blue eyes. As soon as their eyes met, Gene whipped his head back round, revving the engine and taking back off at full speed down the long straight. Alex's heart pounded against her chest, her eyes wide with excitement.
"When are you going to stop driving like a bloody lunatic?" Alex whispered breathlessly, gasping as the car rounded another corner.
"When you stop talking bollocks." Gene retaliated, a small smile appearing on his lips. Alex laughed, gripping the side of the car.
The red Quattro grounded to a halt outside CID, the once happy-go-lucky atmosphere pushed away. Alex frowned as the team strode quickly down the corridors, the images of the dead man filling her head. Ray shook his head.
"I don't get it, why would the arsehole kill her, then leave her on full display? How could no-one have seen anything?" He groaned in frustration.
"Because he's a bastard." Gene growled, striding into the office. He opened up his door, jerking his head, motioning for Alex to follow. She obeyed quickly, her head down and her brain working at full speed.
"Keats is gunna kill me, if we don't nail this bastard then I might as well kiss my arse goodbye."
Alex smiled slightly, her body quivering at the close proximity of her guv, she shook her head, trying to focus,
"I'm sure you'd give him a run for his money if he tried to so much as touch you. And, might I just add, I'd have something to say about it. If Jim kicks your sorry arse out on the street you can trust me to talk him to death, then you can come back." Alex babbled, smiling at herself. Gene raised his eyebrows.
"You would?"
"Course I would. Your my guv Gene, your team needs you. I need you." Alex waited for his reaction, unsure of what he would do in responce to her last comment.
"Thanks Bolls. I need you too. God knows how many scumbags would have their heads smashed against the door if I didn't have you to keep me in line." Gene grinned, holding his office door open, "Luigi's?" He asked his DI, even thought he knew the answer.
"Yeah Gene. Come on." Alex strode out of CID, closely followed by the Manc Lion.
