Chapter 1
Quiet, dark and alone. Just how she liked it. The only light came from the full moon in the perfect night sky. She stared out of the window of her loft apartment. The lights, everything was off; everything except a small digital radio. Other than the soft jazz coming from the radio's speaker, the room was silent. Yep, this is just how she liked it. After the chaotic day she had had at work, who wouldn't want some quiet time? There had been a long string of murders, the files were piling up. She was highly ranked in the department of administrative research, but was also well versed in forensic science. So she was lending a hand.
It was a nice night, warm. A small glass of gin and tonic on the rocks sat on the sill next to her, the condensation dripping down the glass creating a small puddle of cold water around and underneath, soaking into the unstained wood.
Her eyes were closed, she was almost dozing, head back on the fabric covered wall behind her. She didn't even realize the sounds coming from the co-joining kitchen area. Before she knew it there was a cloth secured in front of her nose and mouth... an cloth covered in chloroform. Flailing she attempted to shift her assailant, anything to get this person off of her, but the alcohol and tiredness had long began to kick in; this coupled with the chloroform, meant that her struggle was futile.
Her arms fell to her sides, eyes rolled back as she lost control of her senses. Everything went black.
A phone rang, it was ten in the morning. The sunlight shone through the spaces in the blinds hitting everything in the room. The office was empty its occupant was out getting coffee from the machine down the hall. Tseng could hear his office phone cursing slightly under his breath, he quickly picked up his mug, and quickly made his way back to his office
'wasn't even able to put milk in this'.
The phone was still going off when he entered the office;
"Yeah, yeah." sighing he picked up the receiver
"Hello?" his voice was emotionless, professional.
"Hello there, Tseng" The voice on the other end was female. He knew this voice, but it had been a long time since he had heard from her.
"Ah, Milla. What can I do for you?" his voice a little more cheerful than it had been upon answering.
"You took your time" Milla joked. Tseng just laughed
"Look time no hear!" Tseng said "Though I'm guessing from the solemnity of your voice, your not calling to catch up" he could hear the woman breathing on the other end. Something must have happened. Its not often that the criminal investigations department called them.
"Yes, I suppose you would be right this time." she paused again "There's been an incident. This recent string of murders, just got personal. We found another body, and its one that you know this time" she stopped again. Tseng had a bad feeling about this. One of his colleges had been working on this case... was it her? His heart was beating fast, it felt as though it had travelled up to his throat. His breathing restricted.
'please, just tell me already'
"Your a clever man, so you have already sussed out why I have phoned you. Its Muna." Tseng's heart felt as though it had dropped, sinking like lead in water.
"So... she's..." his voice trailed off.
"I'm sorry" and she hung up.
