THE YELLOW FLASH OF VALE

CHAPTER ONE – OP SEMBLANCE FOR THE WIN

I stared at the mirror. Bright, blue eyes positioned on an angular face and framed by spiky, jaw-length blonde hair stared right back.

Dressed in a blue tracksuit with three stripes on each sleeve, a black short-sleeved hoodie with detached reddish-orange sleeves, black gloves with small metal plates over the back with dark blue combat boots. I can be taken as an everyday goon and not the hero I aim to be. But that's not the point. Right now, my costume doesn't matter. What does is. . .

"Would all first year students please report to Beacon Cliff for initiation"

Yeah, that's it.

Placing my weapons in its pouches, breathing deeply once, I made my way to the designated location.

. . .

"For years you have trained to become warriors and today, your abilities will be evaluated in the Emerald Forest." The Headmaster, Ozpin, stated taking a sip of his coffee from his mug.

"Now, I'm sure many of you have heard rumors about the assignment of teams." Miss Goodwitch continued in lieu of her boss, giving the aforementioned person an exasperated glance. "Allow us to put an end to your confusion. Each of you will be assigned teammates. . . today."

"These teammates will be with you for the rest of your time here at Beacon, so it is in your best interest to be paired with someone you can work well with." Ozpin paused, taking another sip from his mug he continued.

"That being said, the first person you make eye contact with after landing will be your partner for the next four years."

I raised an eyebrow but couldn't help the soft chuckle that left my lips. The whole partnering thing was left up to chance. How professional.

Beside me, my soon-to-be classmates' reactions were mixed.

"After you've partnered up make your way to the northern end of the forest. You will meet opposition on the way. Do not hesitate to destroy everything in your path or you will die." His words took immediate effect on the assembled students, each one of them tensing up in preparation.

The headmaster continued, ignoring the state of the teens before him. "You will be monitored and graded for the duration of your initiation but our instructors will not intervene regardless of what happens. You will find an abandoned temple at the end of your path containing several relics. Each pair must choose one and return to the top of the cliff. We will regard that item, as well as your standing, and grade you appropriately. Are there any questions?"

Do you have a question?

Did I?. . . Well. . .

"Sir-"

"Good. Take your positions." I had to stifle the urge to strangle the headmaster for acting like I was not even there. I shook it off quickly, breathing out deeply to release the bout of anger I felt at the slight. Steeling my nerves, I closed my eyes and waited.

A slight jolt from below me was all the warning I had before I was launched into the air, tumbling over the lush, green forest. Grasping one of my weapons, a specially crafted triple-prong kunai, I opened my eyes while simultaneously flicking my wrists, releasing the kunai at my intended target – a tree.

The familiar feeling of vertigo overcame me and I immediately found myself on my targeted tree. With another flick of my wrist the kunai was hidden once more and I dropped to the forest floor in a graceful crouch.

Standing to my full height, which was an impressive 5'11, I was honestly surprised to see a Beowolf close enough to kiss me. And by kiss I meant blow hot air onto my face.

Pivoting on my heel, I extended a hand and was privy to the Grimm's head falling to the ground with a thud, slowly dissolving ichor on my blade its last remains.

As if summoned by the death of their kind, Beowolves of all sizes and facial expressions emerged from the bushes, surrounding me on all sides. Their mouths bared in a snarl, claws out as they readied themselves to attack.

One charged at me, its massive frame tearing into the ground as it crossed the distance swiftly. With finesse gotten from practice, I ducked underneath the failed claw strike, rolling away from the beast just as it fell to the ground, dead. Felled by the kunai I held.

I took out another blade, holding them towards the Grimms in a reverse grip. Steeling my gaze, I rushed at them.

I weaved through the horde of creatures, using my aura to enhance my speed to dodge their attacks and my strength to land crushing blows.

I breathed out deeply. The Grimms were killed, their remains fading with the winds.

Not bothering to stay and wait for a partner or look for one, I quickly set off towards North where the temple was said to be. It didn't take me much time to reach it which I found a tad bit disappointing.

On reaching the temple, which was now less of a temple and more of a ruin, I chose a chess piece and placed it in one of my many hidden pockets.

"Should I stay here? I still haven't partnered with anybody." I asked myself whilst scratching the back of my head. Deciding to stay here and wait, I sat on the ground.

After some minutes passed, my back having acquainted itself with the ground and my eyes to the clouds, I wondered... How long do I have to-

"Didn't think we will be the first one here, eh Blakey?" A voice sounded from somewhere in the clearing.

"We are not." A short and curt reply came immediately after the first one finished.

"We are. . . Oh!" Some light footstep and my view was completely blocked by yellow. "Who do we have here?"

She moved back and I used the opportunity to prop myself up.

"Jaune A-"

I raised my head, my eyes scanning the sky for the source of the scream. Finding the source, or rather the person that screamed, my eyes widened.

"That sounds like my-" Yellow was interrupted by another earsplitting scream.

"Help!"

I wasn't sure how the screaming girl came to be falling through the sky but but shook that off to focus on saving her. It was probably not a good idea to let her fall on her face. First impression and all of that. Taking out two kunai, I threw one at a tree adjacent to me.

Less than a second later, misplaced dirt, and I found myself kicking the tree, launching myself up. Barely a twitch and another kunai was sent flying towards the screaming girl. A blink of an eye and I appeared beside the girl and grabbed her, appearing on the tree again.

"Okay?" I asked, my gaze softening as I stared on her staggering form. It will take some time before she will get use to my semblance. And that's if she ever does.

"Wow," the girl muttered, in awe at the fast paced rescue. "How did you do that? Was that your semblance?"

I ignored the questions, my gaze focused on another rapidly falling girl. How many are there?

I sighed deeply, prepping my legs before leaping of the tree. Catching her so she landed on both outstretched hands, I repositioned myself, bracing my legs for impact.

And what an impact it was. I found my frustration rising as my aura reduced.

I dropped White, turning back to see the screaming girl fall back to the ground.

"Ruby!" Yellow came barreling towards screaming girl, her hands outstretched and expression one of joy.

"Yang!" Screaming girl A.K.A Ruby muttered, embarrassed at the public display of affection.

"You scared me." Yellow, known to be Yang, confided, burying her face into Ruby's cloak before adopting a lecturing pose, her partner, an emo-ninja called Blakey(?), having come up to stand beside her. "What were you up to?"

"Well. . . "Ruby began, rubbing the back of her neck as she adopted a sheepish expression. "I. . . "

She didn't get a chance to continue as an Ursa crashed into the clearing interrupting her. An eyebrow was raised in bemusement.

"Aww, it's broken." An orange-haired girl, who had apparently ridden the Grimm bemoaned at the loss of her ride.

The eyebrow rose further.

"Nora! Please. . . never do that again." The aforementioned girl's partner panted pleading to the unusual girl. Sadly, it went unheard as Nora somehow made her way, with no one the wiser, to the ruins where she took a Rook piece from its pedestal and started singing.

"~Ooo. I'm the Queen of the castle! I'm the Queen of the castle!"

"NORA!" The girl's partner's admonishing voice was heard from beside the slowly dissolving Grimm.

She chuckled sheepishly, "Coming Ren!"

"Did that girl just ride in on an Ursa?" Getting out of her trance, the emo-ninja asked in disbelief.

The sounds of trees being felled brought everyone's attention to the forest where it seemed someone was running from an elder Death Stalker.

My eyebrow completely disappeared above my bangs

The girl, though successfully flipping over one of the Grimm's pincers, didn't account for its other one and got thrown across the clearing, landing beside me. Helping her up, I was greeted to her forest, green eyes.

"L-looks like we're partners now." She said somewhat hesitantly.

"Looks like it." A short reply and my attention was back to the approaching Grimm, or should I say Grimms? That nevermore was still up there, just out of sight now.

"No need to dilly-dally. Our objective has being complete. We have gotten our relics." White spoke out, sheathing back her weapon, a rapier if I wasn't wrong, after freezing the Grimm literally in place.

I breathed out before nodding my head in agreement. "Yeah, let's head back to the Cliffs."

All eight huntsmen-in-training immediately booked it, heading for the Cliffs where the teachers stood awaiting their arrivals.

Upon reaching a partially destroyed bridge, we began jumping over the gap towards the other side. But of course that's when the nevermore swooped in and completely destroyed the bridge, sending debris and teenagers flying.

Twisting Immediately, I barely avoided the Grimm's outstretched wings, using it as a handhold to flip myself onto a detached stone wall, using that as a ledge to jump onto another one, my trip continuing like that...

Jumping over another piece of ruin, I used it to flip myself over and onto the persistent bird Grimm. Sliding down, I whipped out a kunai and stabbed into its back earning a screech for my efforts. Disembarking from the irate Nevermore, I landed on the other side of the bridge to see my partner, Nora and Ren fighting the Death Stalker from earlier.

With a grunt, I rushed the Grimm. Seeing my partner's attack render the Death Stalker's stinger limp, I threw my kunai at the space beside it and with barely a thought passing through my mind at that moment, I found myself in that spot grasping the thrown kunai tightly.

With speed and precision that only comes through practice, I slashed at the stinger and was satisfied with how it fell directly on the beast's head.

Landing, I quickly turned to my assembled teammates. "Nora, smash!" I called out, pointing towards the stinger.

The plan was simple:

Pyrhha was to position herself and raise her shield above her head in front of Nora who would use it as a ledge to jump, gathering enough momentum to nail it.

But. . . not all plan survives first contact with the enemy.

The elder Death Stalker blocked the attack with its pincer destroying it in the process but prolonging its life. The hyperactive girl shot backwards to increase the distance between her and the beast before shooting off towards it to prevent it from borrowing into the ground and escaping again.

The Grimm occupied by the orange-haired, failed to notice her partner, who had used her charge as a sufficient distraction, dart in from behind, slashing at its legs. Though it did notice the spear, courtesy of my partner, lodged into its eye. Hissing in anger and pain, it reared its front up.

Thank dust for Plan B's, also known as 'improvisation'.

Jumping, I grabbed onto the spear and swung myself higher. Turning in the air, I reared back my fist, gathering aura into it, before releasing a devastating punch on the stinger turned nail.

The Grimm's head popped like a balloon.

I landed, just in time to see Ruby behead the Nevermore with her scythe.

My eyebrow had never reached the heights it did today.

. . .

"Russel Thrust. Cardin Winchester. Dove Bronzewing. Sky Lark. The four of you retrieved the black Bishop pieces. From this day forward you will work together as Team CRDL (Cardinal). Lead by Cardin Winchester."

"Jaune Arc. Lie Ren. Pyrrha Nikos. Nora Valkyrie. The four of you retrieved the white Rook pieces. From this day forward you will work together as Team JNPR (Juniper). Lead by. . .

My eyebrow began to twitch as the silence stretched on. He had better pick. . .

". . . Jaune Arc."

Figures.

"And finally. Blake Belladona. Ruby Rose. Weiss Schnee. And Yang Xiao-Long. The four of you retrieved the white Knight pieces. From this day forward you will work together as Team RWBY (Ruby). Lead by Ruby Rose.

That was. . . surprising. But maybe she can be an effective leader. She did behead a freaking Nevermore in one move.

I turned on my heels and headed towards my team's designated dorm, my teammates in toll. As I left, I swore I could hear the headmaster muttering something.

What a creep.

. . .

How was that? Don't worry, the size of the subsequent chapters will increase. But that's if you love it and I hope you do. If you actually approve of the fanfic, review, favorite and follow.
