It was a sunny day on the Island of Sodor, and all the engines were working hard.
Gordon was feeling very excited. Sir Topham Hatt had asked him to take the Duke and Duchess of Boxford to a special reception at Maron Station.
"Morning Thomas!" he said cheerfully. "Do I look splendid?"
"Yes, but why?" asked Thomas.
"Because the Duke and Duchess are visiting, and Sir Topham Hatt wants me to take them to Maron Station."
Thomas was cross.
Gordon was washed and polished, then set off to collect the Duke and Duchess.
But a signal diverted Gordon into a siding! He was very cross.
"I'm going to be late!" he muttered.
Just then, a huge engine whooshed pass Gordon at warp speed.
"Steaming pistons! Who's that!"
Gordon soon found out when he arrived at the sheds. The huge engine was humming quietly.
"Who are you?"
"This is Spencer, the fastest engine in the world!" said James.
Gordon was still very cross, but secretly he was impressed.
"I'm the Duke and Duchess's private engine. I take them everywhere!"
Just then, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
"I see you have met Spencer. He will be taking the Duke and Duchess to Maron Station."
"Why can't I do it?" moaned Gordon.
"Really useful engines do not argue over what to do." boomed Sir Topham Hatt as he set away.
"That's on the other side of Gordon' Hill!" said James. "Spencer might not make it up the hill!"
"Then you'll need to take up plenty of water!" muttered Gordon.
"I have plenty of water!" wheeshed Spencer as he raced away.
Gordon was disappointed. He wouldn't be taking the Duke and Duchess around the island after all.]
Spencer collected the Duke and Duchess, and showed them around Sodor, not even stopping once to take on water.
Gordon and Thomas were collecting passengers when Spencer raced through on his way to the party.
"Don't forget the water!" called out Gordon.
"Who cares!" cried Spencer.
"He'll be in trouble soon!" sighed Thomas.
Soon, there was trouble. He ran out of water, right at the top of Gordon' hill.
"Why didn't I listen?"
Sir Topham Hatt soon heard the news.
"I'll send Gordon." he boomed.
When Gordon arrived, the stationmaster was waiting.
"You need to rescue Spencer! He's stuck on the hill!"
"Hurry Gordon!" said his driver.
Gordon was looking forward to seeing Spencer.
"Ran out of water?" he teased.
"Yes!" snapped Spencer. "I must have a leaky tank!"
"Perhaps we should hurry!" smiled Gordon.
Gordon switched to Spencer' line and was coupled up. Then, they set off.
They soon arrived at the party
"Right on time!" said Gordon.
But Spencer was embarrassed.
"So what do you think of Spencer now?" Thomas whispered.
"Too much puff and not enough steam!" exclaimed James.
"Good work Gordon!" said Sir Topham Hatt. "You are the fastest engine on Sodor!"
"I know that!" muttered Gordon.
