The first time he sees her, it's at a convention - she's introduced as the Snowpoint Gym Leader, Candice, and he's introduced as Flint, of the Elite Four. He doesn't understand the titles, really - doesn't understand the "system." Her voice sends chills down his spine - it's cool and collected and just a bit childish, and he decides he's never been so in love with a sound before.

The next time he sees her, she's at one of Cynthia's parties. Her black hair is up in a bun, sophisticated and elegant, and he thinks, 'how will I ever be good enough for her?' while he watches her try to catch the attention of his blond best friend - the Shining Shock Star who will never love her, because he's already enamored with Jasmine of Olivine. And it makes him sick, really, because he can't stand watching her look so sad, eyes so dull. She stands alone - a rare sight, because she's always with someone -, and so he saunters on over to her, wearing his sloppy excuse for a suit, and strikes up a conversation.

"Hey, Candice!" He says, drawing out the words to a point that makes her pay attention to him.

She smiles, faintly, not really concentrating on him. "Hi, Flint."

He doesn't reply—rather, he stands by her side, eyes losing that fire that should be there. He doesn't mind that she isn't talking, doesn't (does, so much) care that she won't look at him—he is content being by her side.
