Chapter One

In 1815 M. Antonio Fernández Carriedo was Bishop of Digne. He had held the position of watching over Digne since 1806. Although the following details don't effect the plot in anyway, it won't be useless to quote the rumors that were about him when he joined the diocese, for what is said about men, true of false, greatly influences the actions of their lives, and often heir destinies. M. Fernández was the son of a councilor of the Aix Parliament It's said that his father intended him to be his successor, and had him married at the age of eighteen or twenty- a common practice for parliamentary families. Antonio, despite the marriage, had been the cause of much chatter. He was well built, elegant, graceful and friendly, and the earlier part of his life was devoted to the world and to gallantry. However, the French Revolution came about, and the parliamentary families were hunted down. Antonio emigrated to Italy in the early part of the revolution, and his wife died there. When he returned to France, he was a priest.

In 1804, M. Fernández was the priest of Brignolles. Around the time of the coronation of the emperor Napoleon, he went to Paris. He was applying to Cardinal on behalf of his parishioners when the saw the emperor pass by. Napoleon, noticing the man regard him with such curiosity, asked sharply "Who is this good man?"

"Sire," M. Fernández said "you are looking at a good man and I am looking at a great man. We might both profit from it."

That evening, the emperor asked the Cardinal the priest's name, and M. Fernández was surprised to find he was made Bishop of Digne. Whether these rumors are true or not, no one knows, but as for every newcomer to little towns, there are always rumors about them. However after 10 years in Digne, all the rumors had fallen into deep oblivion. No one would dare speak it or even dare to remember them. M. Fernández had arrived at Digne accompanied by M. Feliciano Vargas and his brother, M. Lovino Vargas. Feliciano was a small, slim, cheerful person. Lovino was lazy, short tempered man, and always complaining about something or other.

Upon arrival, M. Fernández was brought to his new home. The mayor and the president visited him first, and he paid his first visit to the general and the prefect. When the installation ended the town went to see its new bishop at work.

Author's Note: Yay! My first fanfic! For this chapter, I was mainly going off of the book, but my reference might change as I go throughout the story. Sorry if it seems a bit robotic, it is really my first time writing a fanfiction. Also, I hope this seems original. I thought of this idea long before the movie came out, even though I'm just starting now. If there is another Les Mis/Hetalia fanfic out there with similar things to mine, I don't want hate or anything. This is completely my idea. Another note: I may change some relationships around to better fit the story. Thank you and enjoy!
