I wrote this ages ago; and it's the same story (I just got rid of some of the author's notes). Loosely based off of the promo for 2x03-I emphasize, loosely.

I'm also pretty sure this was the first angst-y thing I ever wrote. And the first AOS thing (or, the first AOS thing that was sufficiently good to be published).

I don't own Agents of Shield. Sorry.

No, no no, she...

A little voice at the back of his mind tries to tell him the word he's looking for, but he shuts it out.

He shuts her out.

It wasn't supposed to happen this way. She wasn't supposed to be Hydra.

They were supposed to be friends.

But it had all been a farce, a lie.

He manages to choke out one word: "When?"

Fitz dreads her answer-that's all she is in his head now, a she.

"Since before." Her voice is full of regret, but he doesn't care. He knows what before refers to-before they met, before they became inseparable. Before.

At the Academy, at SciOps, this plane. You've been beside me the whole damn time.

Apparently she hadn't, not really.

"You lied to me."

I'm going to do what we always do. We're going to fix this. Together.

But this can't be fixed.

She is HYDRA, and he is SHIELD. They are two opposite sides of a coin.

He had followed her all the way, been by her side through everything.

Oh, please, as if I forced you to follow me anywhere!

But she had. She and her good-girl antics; her ability to drag him into situations he never would have ever gotten into. Her ability to get him on this plane.

And don't you do anything rash while I'm gone... Like jump out of an airplane.

A little ironic, really. She had risked her life to save his, and he had risked his to save hers.

Jumping out of an airplane does things to a relationship, but now he realizes that it had all been part of the facade.

You and Simmons are so tight. It's like you're psychically linked.

He had shared his deepest secrets with her, had late-night movie fests after long days. Thought of innovations that would never be rivaled.

But all that was over now.

He steels his face and walks away from her.

"Fitz, wait."

He doesn't listen.

She can't be redeemed, and neither can they.

So he walks away, and doesn't look back.

I hope that was sufficiently angsty.

Please R&R!
