A PAINFUL GOODBYE

-Ishikawa Aya-hime-

"Len, what are you doing?"

"Have you eaten already?"

"I miss you."

"I love you!"

These are the common text messages he always receive from no other than, his girlfriend, Hino Kahoko. And he felt very lucky to have her.

It's already 9 pm in the evening, and his eyes were fluttering down, begging for rest.

He placed his phone on the desk beside his bed, and lay down.

Before he drifts away in sleep, he heard his phone rang three times, but his drowsiness didn't allow him to read it more.

"Len! ! !" Kahoko who suddenly appeared in his dream, shouted. "Help me! ! ! LEN!"

The next morning, he woke up with a head ache, sweat rushing down from his forehead.

"Son, what's wrong?"

"It's nothing… I just had a nightmare that Kahoko was in trouble."

Misa lowered her head. "Ah, about Kahoko…"

"She's perfectly fine, isn't she? I jut got messages from her, see—" Misa cut him off before he could even open his inbox.

"Her mother wants to see you right away."

He was so relaxed when he dropped by to her place, until he saw her mother crying.

"Auntie, what's wrong?" She looked at him, and then buried her face once more on her palms, unable to face him.

"Auntie, don't cry…" he comforted, patting her back. "Where's Kahoko?"

"Len-san… Kahoko is…"

"Is there something wrong with her?"

"S-she… died last night…" Kaho's mother finished.

He was taken aback, with wide eyes and an open mouth.

All in his mind were;

What? How? When? Why?

No… This isn't true…

"She was… w-walking down the streets last night, alone… The inspector said… she could be r-raped and killed…" she explained, then cried more.

He was speechless. He didn't know what to say nor react. Instead, he picked up his phone and read the last three messages she sent him.

"Len… There's a group of boys that's been following me… Please come here…"

"I really need you. They're coming closer and closer. Please, Len. I'm near the convenient store."

"Len… Please… I love you…."

He dropped his phone, frozen. He just leant a very valuable lesson, to read every messages he receive, especially in urgent times.

But would it still be effective on him? Now that the love of his life is gone…
