"Windy Rainy Night"
Charles reflects on his very long and complicated relationship with Erik, how his old friend became Magneto, and whether there's still any hope left in him. This is songfic to "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)," an incredibly beautiful, haunting song by Don McLean. If you have the means, please listen to it, or at least read the original lyrics, which are so infinitely better than mine. Oh, and feel free to read and review, too.
Disclaimer: Believe it or not, "X-Men" and its characters belong to Marvel, not me. In other words, I do not own the people or plot in this fic. / If I did, I'd have a wallet the weight of a brick.
Windy rainy night
Recall the night we met
Look down at your chessboard set
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Your quiet face lined with age
Your sorrow turns to rage
In this lonely plastic cage
I know that it will not hold you for long
Now I understand
Why you believe in what you do
I know I might believe it too
Had I been through as much as you
You cannot hope, you've forgotten how
Perhaps you'll remember now
Windy rainy night
Burning temples, yellow stars
Broken glass and iron bars
Reflect in Erik's eyes of steely gray
Hope begins to slip away
Shadows falling on the land
Metal bending towards his hand
All the memories that time cannot erase
Now I understand
Why you believe in what you do
I know I might believe it too
Had I been through as much as you
You cannot hope, you've forgotten how
Perhaps you'll remember now
Just a child, you survived
As your people slowly died
Now no hope is left inside
For on a windy rainy night
You lost your faith as dreamers often do
But I tried to tell you, Erik
That mankind has evolved
Since they did those things to you
Windy rainy night
Blood and iron set you free
"Fighting the good fight?" you ask me
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Almost as if we'd never met
You used to cry in your sleep
Back when you still had dreams of peace
I thought we'd be friends forever, too
Now I understand
I know I might believe it, too
Had I been through what you've been through
When they wrote that number on you
Your hope began to disappear then
And you have no hope left still
Perhaps you never will...
