Just a short oneshot I wrote a few days ago. Based on Eric Szmanda's quote: 'Greg hasn't given up on her.' Set after Way to Go.
Giving Up
He still remembered the first time he saw them as a couple.
The images of Grissom kissing Sara softly on her lips before she turned to leave his office, were printed in his mind so brightly that he was afraid they were never going to fade away.
Of course Greg, just like everyone else, had taken notice of the tension between Sara Sidle and her boss since years. But, differently than everyone else, had he not enjoyed the fact that this tension had grown to an actual relationship. Not at all.
Because during all these years of watching Sara and Grissom grow closer and fall apart again, there had been a tiny piece of hope inside of him.
Hope that someday Sara would get tired of the chase and give up on Grissom. That she would finally turn to the one person who had been admiring her since the first time she had entered in the Las Vegas crime lab.
But the circumstances being what they were, that tiny piece had become so tiny that Greg had almost given up on Sara.
Almost.
Greg watched from his seat in the break room as the couple entered the Lab. One of Grissom's arms was resting on Sara's shoulder, softly pressing her against him.
But, in contrast to her boss, Sara didn't smile or look happy. She was merely glancing from side to side uncomfortably, as if she were afraid anyone would see the two of them together.
When they had arrived at the break room, Sara shrugged Grissom's arm off carefully. As she saw his confused look, she quickly flashed him a smile, of which Greg was entirely sure that it was a forced one.
"I gotta go," he read from her lips.
She turned to go, but Grissom grasped her wrist, pulling her back. She looked a little shocked, but he smiled and kissed her gently.
Sara softly pushed him away and then hurried into the break-room. There she leaned against the wall and sighed, closing her eyes.
As she opened them again and spotted Greg, she smiled at him nervously. "G-Goodmorning, Greg."
"Hi, Sara."
He smiled as he felt the piece of hope growing bigger. No, Greg hadn't given up on Sara.
