When I first awoke

I was alone

Where and who I was, I did not know

It was like I had never seen the sun before

I was truly a newborn, in more ways than one

It was a strange new world, opening before my eyes

All I knew was that my name was Alice

And to my great surprise

I glittered in the sun, yes shined

I did not yet know I was a vampire; that was for sure

I only felt that my throat was sore

Yes, it burned like flames, thirsting for blood

It was overwhelming, and suddenly, I did not care any more

Where, who or even what I was

it did not matter at all

My only wish was to nub the pain in my burning throat

But then I saw that vision of you, and it made me stop

I saw your face, albeit fuzzy, and I knew you were destined to be mine

The most important person of all

My mate

The fate of my existence

And somehow, your solemn eyes made me return to my senses

At least for a while

The vision of your smile, my comfort in the loneliness

I also saw other things; a strange family with golden eyes

Only drinking the blood of animals, to spare human lives

At first it blew my mind, but then I tried

To follow their example, and it was a great relief

To be able to feed, without causing grief

No more lost futures

No more wives mourning their spouses

Or fathers their sons

Yes, it set my mind at peace

And I knew, deep inside, that my way of life

Would be your great release

From all the pain and despair in your haunted gaze

Yes, it was my fate, to help you on the way

Then came that day, when I knew the time was ripe

We would finally meet in real life

I had waited, a long, long time

When you entered that diner, everything fell into place

The connection was instant, we were truly mates

It was my happiest ever day

You were no longer an elusive image in my head

I had finally met you, my destined mate, my fate

It was the beginning of a new era, for both of us, my beloved friend

Mesmerized by my golden eyes, you asked me why

That there is another way of life

That family of my vision, who also valued human lives
