Summary: What might have been the impact of Buffy's death on Angel and his thoughts while in Sri Lanka.

A/N1: I was on my way home recently and a song that I had not heard in a long time came on the car radio. The song was 'Your Song' by Elton John. It was always my opinion that the thought expressed in the last line of the song was absolutely beautiful, and I couldn't help but think what might have been Angel's reactions to the news of Buffy's death and what might have been his thoughts while he was in the monastery.

A/N2: Assumes there was no resurrection spell.

Angel couldn't sleep. How he longed for the oblivion that dreamless sleep would bring. Instead, he lay awake in the dark, his heart heavy with images of Buffy as she lay dead at the foot of Glori's monstrous tower as Willow had described to him.

Out of nowhere the lyrics of a song drifted through his mind, 'How wonderful life is while you're in the world'.*

He recalled that for a while life had been wonderful - meeting and getting to know Buffy, patrolling with her, falling in love with her. Even after he had to leave Sunnydale, just knowing that she was still alive and still doing some of the things that they had done together often brought a brief mental smile. He would hold on to that, to the memories of what might have been.

He fell asleep then, and dreamed…dreamed of possibilities of a forever life with the woman he would forever love.

When he was awake again, Angel smiled, a sad smile but a smile of relief. He knew that he would never see Buffy again, but he had something to hold on to; he could go on. He could return to Angel Investigations and he would continue to honor her by helping the helpless.

Throughout the rest of his unlife, whenever he was unable to sleep and thought that he could not go on, he would recall the brief one-line lyrics of the song that brought him back to reality. He would fall asleep then and dream beautiful dreams of himself and Buffy forever together.

The end.
