In His Eyes

I am older then he is by two years, but he has always been
there.
I can't remember a time when I did not know him, though there
must have been one. I don't try to remember- I would not want to
know one. As long as he is there, I will wait for him.
He is Demando, the Crown Jewel of Nemesis, our Diamond. We
all love him as well as fear him- it is a good thing, to my mind.
Without fear, there can be no love, at least not for me. The two
are so linked in my mind that they can not be separated.
I was his childhood playmate, and, for a while, his
Guardian. I kept him from falling down the stairs when he insisted
on exploring the lower levels of the Palace. I was the one who
stole blueberry tarts from the kitchen when he ordered me to do so,
and accpeted the blame when I was foolish enough to get caught. I
was the one who was his first servant, and I will always remain so.
Those early years of my life were all for him, and I have never been
happier.
All too soon we were joined by my first cousin, Demando's
second cousin, Esmeraude. She was his age, but had been kept
separate until the death of her nursemaid Wollasta forced her into
our company. She was an annoying little thing from the start, and
that cackle! God, I hate her voice. It's like the proverbial
nails on a chalkboard, if you get my meaning.
She was more then an irritation for me. Prior to her, I was
Demando's only confident -not a friend, for the Heir could not afford
the price of friends- by confident, the one he would always tell his
plans to. Then the snivelling brat came into our lives. No,
that's not exactly true- Saffir was the snivelling one- Esmeraude was
the whiner. But I'll get to Saffir eventually. He's an important
part of Demando's worldview, and thus, is important to me.
Everything about Demando is important, though. In his eyes,
I see the world.
