Lost Spirit, Broken Soul

'Spirited Away, my tale'

"Haku?"

The smell of cherry blossoms carried by the warm breeze surrounded a young girl about sixteen years of age. The sun felt nice on her face when she lifted her eyes skyward to breathe in the smell. Birds sang their songs as the girl traveled further into the abandoned amusement park. The street was lined with restaurants that seemed to have not been completely abandoned; they gave out eerie sensations.

"Haku."

The girl wandered further still; the wind picked up, only now it was cold and angry. The sun seemed to have been hidden by clouds in mere seconds. She took a step onto a bridge; the cool wood felt nice to her bare feet. She looked down at her feet for a brief moment before looking up again. A boy now stood in the center of the bridge; he hadn't been there a second ago. He looked familiar so she began to walk towards him.

"Haku…"

He held up his right hand as if to say 'stop, go back'. She paused; why didn't he want her to come to him. She took another step forward. He formed a fist with his left hand and stomped his right foot still holding up his right hand. His eyes were pleading her to turn back. The wind swirled around her causing her hair to fly about her head; she pushed her hair back to see him again. His dark hair likewise flying in the wind but he made no move to push it out of his eyes. He again stomped his foot; she turned to look back at where she'd come from. The vacant street hadn't escaped the whirlwind; things were flying this way and that. But it seemed to be the same place she'd come from. She turned back to once again gaze at him but he was gone.

"Haku!"

Her eyes filled with tears as her feet moved her forward. She turned to face the way back so she could place her feet where his hade been only moments ago. She stared down at her feet as she allowed a tear to roll down her cheek. She looked up and there he was; right where she'd stood. His eyes were sad; almost as if he'd failed her. He lifted his right hand again but this time it was a farewell. Her eyes widened and she reached out with her left hand as if to stop him. He smiled only slightly; but he slowly moved backwards. She wanted to cry out to him; make him come back. She wanted to run after him but she forgot how to move her legs. Tears fell freely now as she watched him slowly vanish to nothing.

"Haku."

She looked down at her feet; he had been here. She felt lost; detached from reality. Lightning flashed high above her; but she heard not a sound. Not when the rain began to pour from the heavens above, nor when her throat became sore from trying to scream his name.

"Haku, you promised."

She tried to move her legs but they were stiff and refused to budge; not to walk nor to fall to her knees in sorrow. She was frozen; lost in the stream of memories that she caught only glimpses of as they disappeared from her mind. She saw his eyes, his smile; felt him, his embrace. She wanted to pull her arm back to her side but it was frozen in place; stuck in the position it had been put in when she tried vainly to pull him back to her.

"Haku, I'm broken."

She cried until her eyes ran dry.

She screamed until her voice was hoarse.

She stood until her legs were sore.

But stand she did, forever more.
