The Brick Wall
Summary: Oneshot. Slade's life was surrounded by a cold, hard wall. It had been built over the expanse of his life, forever being changed and remade, but never fading. Wintergreen's POV.
Hello, readers!
I kinda wrote this after I realized how much everyone needs friends, and how much it should mean.
This fic is dedicated to all my friends.
I own nothing.
Enjoy!
"Wintergreen?"
Dinner was over for the two. Slade had stood up, concerned for his old friend, who seemed to be lost in thought.
"Yes, Slade?"
"Are you alright? You seem to be a little quiet today. Are you ill? Will, you could always take the day off. Just tell me what's wrong," the assassin requested.
"I'm just worried, that's all. It's nothing, Sir. Please, do not be concerned for me. I am merely your butler."
Slade seemed to straighten, resting his hand on Wintergreen's shoulder. The old man looked up.
"You're not just that to me, Will. You're my friend, and I'm yours."
With that, he left.
I, William Wintergreen, am the only friend of a legendary assassin. I am his moral compass, I am his support. I am his servant, I am his butler. However, I am not the only thing he has.
I am not just all of those things. I'm also an old man who is withering into his death, watching his dear friend's life change for the worst. I fear for his life. There is not much I can do, but I must help him.
And here, sat at a wooden table, I am lost in thought about my best friend.
Slade's life was surrounded by a cold, hard wall. It had been built over the expanse of his life, forever being changed and remade, but never fading.
What was that wall? It was his defense, it was his downfall. Each brick had been made after a mistake, after every important thing in his life. All these came together, stuck by the glue of his life force, trapping him in the middle.
It was Slade's fault. No one else's. It was his problem, the reason that he would eventually lose.
The only time someone had gotten in, they'd been shoved out by what was inside of it. Adeline. The truth that was locked out was too much for his ex wife.
I was always on the other side of the wall, hopelessly trying to tear the bricks away. It didn't work, but at times I managed to enter the man's life. It was enough, but it cannot last forever.
The Teen Titans? Forever a hindrance. They seemed to build the wall just to tear it down. A hindrance yet a help. Oddly amusing, and Slade seemed to think so too.
To save his life, the wall would have to be knocked down. But of course that couldn't happen, even if Slade needed it. The solution was to let people in.
I fear for my friend's life. The man is too cold, yet too emotional. He is a killer, a friend, a father and a lover. Anybody could tell he still loves Adeline.
I also fear for what time will do for him. Time is unforgiving, time is the truth. Time goes on forever for most, even for Slade. He may be immortal, but that does not mean he cannot die.
If the problem is not solved, I will be gone far too early. That man will turn into something he is not yet. A monster. He needs me, I need him.
I will stay with him to the end, as his support, forever unwavering from his side.
After all, that's what friends are for.
