Your best friend, Riley, once told you that the answer to life was forty-two.
It was a joke, and to a fifth grader it was the funniest thing ever, but you find out real quick that life isn't as simple as 1 + 1 = 2.
The boy you like is the ex-boyfriend of your best friend, Riley Matthews. You'd give that girl anything, and she does the same for you. When she stepped back you think you found love in Lucas, and you force yourself to believe that.
It's as awkward as all get-out. Maybe, you start to think, maybe you fell in love with an idea, not the boy himself. It's fifty-two. You see the way he looks at Riley, and when Uncle Josh comes to visit you realize all you've ever wanted is for him to look at you that way.
At New Year's, when Farkle finally reveals that Riley had been lying to you all along, your almost relieved when you and Lucas break up. Things, slowly, begin to piece themselves back together. You and Riley make a pack to always tell each other the truth.
But you stay single. You date here and there during high school, but you never go steady until Junior year when you and Josh begin to grow closer. And when you turn eighteen, he takes you out to a nice restaurant and asks you out.
Maybe the secret to life isn't that easy, but for you it still can come out to be forty-two.
You just had to add twelve to four and multiply it by eight and subtract six to get it.
