I brushed back my short curly hair, clasped a slightly smudged grey coat, tied the torn strings of my shoes and took a single step out the door. I breathed in the crisp air outside knowing that this could be my last day seeing my home, well what I called my home anyway. I grew up as an orphan after my parents where killed by peacekeepers for rebelling when I was six, begging for scraps of food at the markets, and finding shelter in an abandoned house. Now I'm off to my second reaping somewhat hoping in the back of my mind I would be chosen as a tribute. In all honesty I have nothing left to lose. I walked steadily to the table where they take a blood sample and flinched slightly from the prick in my finger. Cautiously placing myself in the middle of the crowed, blankly looking forward trying with best efforts to keep too myself and stay intangible. A woman in an elaborate dress staggered on stage with overly high heels and a white washed face, making her look more like a puppet or prop than a person. They went through the standard presider like they did every year where they show a video in which they give a pointless speech about hope.
"Hello District 9 I'm Trinity Floyd, it's time to select are tributes. Let's start with the boys shall we." The woman reached her hand into a large glass bowl and pulled out a scrunched paper.
"Kyle D'Amico."
I stalky ginger haired boy ambulated towards the steps gawkily. I've never seen him around before then again I've never really paid mind to anyone other than myself.
"Congratulations Kyle!" Trinity patted his back when he reached the top of the stairs and then moved back to her original spot.
"Now for the girls!" Once again she pivoted her hand in the bowl and withdrew another paper.
"Passion Gohr." The silence was suddenly broken by an uproar of whispers, amongst the disorder I could pick out what a few people where muttering, I managed to catch on to a girl saying "She's only twelve." Suddenly I could feel my heart sink. An overwhelming feeling of sympathy sunk into me. Everyone hushed as the teary eyed adolescent gradually made her way down the aisle. I turned to look at the area where all the parents stood to find a man and woman holding each other sobbing into the others shoulder. I knew I had to do something, I couldn't just let this happen, she's too young to go through this and her parents didn't deserve to lose a child in such a manner. My hands shook and before I knew what was going on I was in front of the girl with my arm out in front of her chest stopping her from moving forward.
"WAIT!" Everyone's eyes were on me now. I looked back to the girl's parents and slightly nodded my head at them then doing the same to the girl too show them that they have nothing too worry about. I faced the stage and sighed slightly
"I'll be your tribute."
